Subject: Snarkies on Charles Shi, Jay Vleeschhouwer, Rich Valera, Gary Smith

Editor's Note: Every time I publish, the readers send me these
concise replys that are sometimes insightful, but are more often
cynical -- which is why I call them "snarkies". Enjoy. - John

THE NEW NEEDHAM ANALYST: Whenever I meet a new Wall St. analyst (like when
the new guy Charles Shi replaced Rich Valera at Needham) I like to check
them out. See if they bring any real skills to evaluating EDA stocks. Or
are they just sock puppets who parrot whatever the EDA companies tell them?

In my book, a new EDA Wall St. analyst is to be respected if he (or she) has
either amazing accounting/finance/investigative skills to cut through the
B.S. that the public EDA companies spout on their quarterly Earnings Calls
and/or financials (like Jay Vleeschhouwer) ...

Or he (or she) has years of chip design and/or chip verification experience
to -- again -- cut through the B.S. that the public EDA companies spout on
their quarterly Earnings Calls and/or financials (like Gary Smith).

At his introductory talk at DAC'22 in San Francisco, I was very pleasantly
surprised to learn that Charles Shi was a foundry guy with 6 years direct
hands on semi experince at Applied Materials (AMAT)!!!

"Holy crap! AMAT!!! This new Shi guy speaks fluent Chinese, he covers
TSMC stock, and he is schooling us in EDA from a foundry perspective!!!"

      - Two Wall St. analysts crown Anirudh as 2022 King of EDA

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Rich Valera was no sock puppet. He came from Synopsys. He knows EDA.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Valera used to pull me aside at DACs to update him from on a user's view
of what was going on in EDA.

    I will miss those sessions.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I think it was John Barr who hired Rich [Valera] out of Synopsys in
1990-something to become a stock analyst for Needham. Valera was
a FAE for Synopsys then. Barr trained up Rich well.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I knew Rich when he was at Viewlogic.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

[ Nutanix CEO ] Rajiv Ramaswami was smart to hire Valera as his NTNX investor
relations man. Rich has 20+ years as a sell-side analyst for Needham. His
experience will help NTNX go up once they figure out how to deal with the
    open-source Harvester threat.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Valera leaving EDA to go into Cloud software is EDA's loss.

EDA needs veterans like Rich to navigate Wall St.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Jay's brilliant at shifting out all the accounting tricks the EDA vendors
try. He's been doing it for decades.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I saw Jay and Rich as the two old guys who knew everything about EDA stocks
and how to profit from them.
Now with Rich Valera gone, it now leaves Jay as the elder statesman in EDA
    stock analysis.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

    Jay's been good for EDA.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Jay is the only analyst who figures out how ANSS and Siemens EDA are doing.
SNPS and CDNS are easy because they have to report them every quarter.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

My 26 foot Sea Ray 260 Sundancer cabin cruiser was paid for from Jay's tips
    on MENT and LAVA.
If it weren't for Jay (and Rajeev and Wally) my wife wouldn't have let me
    buy my favorite weekend toy.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I miss Gary Smith. Thanks for reminding me of him.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Gary's Sunday "what to see at DAC" was a must attend event before each DAC.
He always had a good reason why to see a specific DAC booth that year.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

This Charles Shi will be a welcome addition. Since Gary's death, the
foundry voice has been missing. The fact that Shi also covers TSMC and he
speaks Chinese are two more pluses.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Thanks for the tip about Charles. I'm going to follow him now, too.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

That's a great intro for this new Shi guy.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I always welcome fresh eyes on EDA as an investment.

        ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
