( DAC'19 Item 1d ) ------------------------------------------------ [12/19/19]
Subject: SNPS Zebu Intel shipments slipping 2 quarters is #1d Best of 2019
EGGS IN THE WRONG BASKET: On the business side, Aart's gone through an
absolute nightmare with Intel *refusing* to take shipments of his Zebu and
HAPS boxes for two full quarters.
The data's all there in the SNPS 19Q3 and 19Q4 earnings calls. Search on
"hardware" in those calls and you'll see the entire story all played out
in coded terms. Lots of dancing around, but it's there if you dig.
"... offset a year-over-year decline in hardware revenue from our largest
emulation customer ..." "... EDA hardware revenue declined year-over-year
against a strong Q3 in 2018 ..." "... magnitude of the declines in hardware
year-to-date, for combined emulation and prototyping ..." "... revenue for
our largest customer will be down in 2019, and that is strictly a function
of the hardware decline ..." "... our largest hardware customer delaying
delivery..." and "It was single customer specific."
Which I and a whole bunch of others interpret as INTEL has put off taking
any Synopsys Zebu Server 4 or HAPS-80 boxes for a full 6 months. Since
last I heard Intel is/was 22% of Synopsys' overall EDA revenue (i.e. "their
biggest customer") spending something like $400 million per year on EDA&IP
and something like $150 to $180 million of that being Zebu and HAPS boxes.
(These are ballpark numbers I've heard the Wall Street guys kick around.)
Life is good when an 800 lbs gorilla plus a monster order with you. But life
truly sucks when that same 800 lbs gorilla pulls all or part of his monster
order from you.
Never put all your eggs in one basket.
P.S. But on the tech side, though, the survey showed that SNPS has a number
of happy and loyal Zebu and HAPS-80 users.

QUESTION ASKED:
Q: "What were the 3 or 4 most INTERESTING specific EDA tools
you've seen this year? WHY did they interest you?"
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Did you see the SNPS earnings calls where Aart talked about his
Zebu deliveries to Intel slipping?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
You have to look at these SNPS earnings calls. Their Zebu
shipments to Intel have slipped two quarters!
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I'll bet you $100 that it's Intel with their hardware sales that
they're talking about in the Synopsys earnings call.

We're a Zebu house. What I really want is Protium.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We like Zebu4. Protium is still not mature.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
If I have access to our Palladium, which is rare, I want Protium.
Otherwise, I want a Zebu Server 4.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
1. Zebu Server 4
2. VCS
3. Questa CDC
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Zebu
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
My SW guys would kill me if I took away their Zebu's.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We were using Cadence Palladium plus Synopsys Zebu, but that cost
us two entire compile/set-up teams to do 4 weeks of work each.
With Palladium plus Protium, we can now do the same amount of work
using only 1/2 the number of engineers we had before.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Was Zebu for SW, Palladium for HW.
Now Protium for SW, Palladium for HW.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Protium. It does what EVE Zebu does better.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Have to say Zebus. Or is that Zebi?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Joachim asked me to say "HAPS-80" here.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I think HAPS is better than Protium.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We get max Mhz with HAPS that beats out Protium.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We like hands-on. Protium is automated, but we can get an extra
3 or 4 Mhz using HAPS if you tune it enough.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
HAPS-80 is what the manly hardware designers use.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
My HAPS skills paid for my kid's college.
