Subject: Users say MENT Calibre is still DRC king was #3 in Best of 2017
CALIBRE IS STILL KING: Users trust Calibre for signoff and don't seem ready
to change that anytime soon.
"We're happy with Calibre. Don't fix what ain't broke is our
philosophy."
"Calibre just works. What more can I ask?"
And with a quick email blast to my PD readers, I could easily find 50 more
happy Calibre users. My point is that there are not a lot of unhappy
Calibre users for Anirudh to easily woo here.

PEGASUS SKEPTICS: In his own CDNlive'17 keynote, when Anirudh did an
unexpected Pearl Harbor type attack on Sawicki's Calibre with...
Anirudh's 19 jabs at Joe Sawicki's Calibre with his Pegasus launch
... it triggered a massive re-examining of the DRC/LVS market by Mentor,
Cadence, and especially the DRC/LVS users themselves. And what came out
is 7 months later is that Anirudh has barely made a dent.
Here's what the users said about Pegasus.
Pegasus is
not real/not ready: ################### 56%
Where that 56% broke out to:
Pegasus lacks runsets
or PVS runsets won't do: ############# 37%
Other: ##### 19%
And the rest said:
We like competition
but this ain't it: ####### 22%
We like competition
and we're hoping: ##### 15%
We see early good
results with Pegasus: ## 7%
Keep in mind that these are the early comments. And to be fair, there are
two guys here getting good early results with Pegasus using PVS runsets.
(But exactly what fab and what node, I don't know.)

QUESTION ASKED:
Q: "What were the 3 or 4 most INTERESTING specific EDA tools
you've seen this year? WHY did they interest you?"
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I see the Pegasus launch as more wishful thinking than an
actual reality by Anirudh. He's trying to have his Innovus
match Aart's IC Validator inside ICC2.
It takes a massive R&D investment to pull this off.
Also, you have to convince Taiwan to back you, too.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We'll switch after Cliff tells us that the Pegasus runs works just
as good as Calibre in their reference flow.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Cadence Pegasus
We've looked at Cadence's new Pegasus, and it is much better than PVS.
Until now, we've never seen anything from Cadence that was good enough
to replace Calibre. We've run the same database to qualify Pegasus on
our GDS and got the same result. Plus foundry support is better than
PVS -- it's more similar to Calibre. We've seen good QoR for Pegasus,
plus Cadence's licensing is attractive. If we buy one Cadence DRC/LVS
license, we can run multi-threading, and get 4 threads.

Pegasus
We are just starting to see results from Pegasus. The early results are
quite promising in that it will provide highly accurate results, and
much faster than alternate solutions.
We expect that Pegasus's integration with Innovus & Virtuoso will save
us many days of manual repairs.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Pegasus is not real. It has no runsets.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We welcome a sustainable competitor to Calibre, but right now
anything relying on PVS runsets isn't it.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Let's talk when TSMC updates Pegasus runsets 4X a year for
each of their advanced nodes.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
When we tried to get a Pegasus demo our local CDNS salesman
only showed us Powerpoint slides for it.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Pegasus is no more a threat to Calibre than PVS was.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I'm old enough to remember when Synopsys pitched their newly
aquired Avanti Hercules to us as a Calibre replacement tool.
That didn't fly back then either.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Competition is good. We're watching Pegasus.
It's not there yet.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Don't care about any new DRC tool.
It's the runsets that make it. Crap runsets mean a crap DRC
check. Pegasus running off of PVS runsets is a bankrupt idea.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We use ICV in our day to day ICC2 runs.
Calibre is still our golden signoff.
I don't see this changing any time soon.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Sawicki has a small secret horde of DRC nerds swarming around
TSMC, GF, Intel, UMC, Samsung. They live there 24/7.
I don't see how Pegasus has a chance against this.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
As a user I welcome real competition in the DRC market.
ICV nor Pegasus aren't it.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I like that Pegasus is massively parallel and in the cloud.
I plan to ask our Calibre FAE why Calibre doesn't do this.
And then see how fast I can run to get away from him. :)
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Asked our TSMC contact if they had any Pegasus runsets
available now or in the making.
He said "nope".
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I want to support Pegasus as much as possible.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We're happy with Calibre.
Don't fix what ain't broke is our philosophy.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Calibre just works. What more can I ask?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Sawicki is right. Currently no one in my professional circle
sees Pegasus being used anywhere.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
My mgmt wants us to support a Calibre competitor.
Yet they do not want to risk any of our chips on it if things
don't work out.
I wanted to ask "so that means we think happy thoughts about
Pegasus and do nothing more?" but I didn't want to lose my job.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Cadence Pegasus
Cadence announced their new DRC tool Pegasus earlier this year.
It seems like exciting tech, fast, massively parallel, and much faster
than PVS (previous product).
It's good that there is real competition in the market now.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Cadence Pegasus
Pegasus is not yet released, so I haven't validated their claims, but
I like what Cadence is doing with it:
- 'massively parallel' and cloud ready.
- 10X faster than PVS, which should make it competitive with Calibre.
- reads existing & previously foundry-certified PVS decks natively.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
For golden signoff we use Calibre exclusively.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Is Pegasus going to be Anirudh's IC Compiler 2?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Didn't Magma have a Quartz DRC tool that tried to take on Calibre?
What happen to it?
