Subject: Dean's IC Manage IP Central makes searchable 100 million IP libraries
The live DAC'24 Troublemakers Panel
Cooley: [ looks at Dean Drako ] Is your product dead?
Dean: Which product are you talking about, John?
Cooley: IP management.
Dean: IP management. Taking that goldmine of IP designs that are in your
company and actually leveraging it.
The problem is that designs are getting more complex, the data is spread out
over the globe in multiple data centers and multiple repositories.
Chip companies are buying and merging with other chip companies -- and they
end up with 7 different internal data management systems. And the people
in one part of the organization don't know about the designs that were done
in another part -- so they can't leverage their internal IP effectively.
So, we've created IC Manage IP Central which creates a holistic view into
every DM (design management) system known to man.
Obviously, it connects into the IC Manage databases -- but it also connects
into ClearCase, Perforce, DesignSync, Git, GitHub, GitLab, GitFun, etc.
Cooley: So it's a giant library of all your company's IP.
Dean: Correct. And it automatically creates an (IP) catalog, gives you a Google-
like search on top of it, can handle 100 million IP objects, and gives you
full traceability and a time machine kind of view into it, so that you
can pull that data in and make it happen.
It's not PLM. It's not putting together a little BOM [bill-of-materials].
It integrates with the PLMs -- but the key is now you can take advantage
of the gold mine of data that your entire organization has.
Cooley: I was going to just ask Tony Hemmelgarn that. What's the difference between
this IC Manage IP Central and your Siemens PLM? It sounds a lot like a
product-life-cycle-management and bill-of-materials type of thing.
Tony: We don't do little BOMs, we do big BOMs in Siemens Teamcenter.
Our Teamcenter is the most proven scalable PDM tool in the world for the
discrete manufacturing side. And we looked at it and said "can't we
apply this to see what we can do in the semiconductor-life-cycle side?"
And so this is growing rapidly for Siemens. GlobalFoundries has started
using Teamcenter. We got Micron using Teamcenter. And we've even got
Samsung using Teamcenter.
Cooley: Samsung?
Tony: Samsung came to us because Samsung uses us (Teamcenter) holistically across
almost everything they do with our products. We're scaling this to be able
to handle their supply chain, their program, everything.
Cooley: Dean?
Dean: It's all great. It's PLM. It's product-lifecycle-management.
It's not a database for your engineers to find the pieces and parts that are
the right pieces and parts for them to incorporate into a semiconductor
design.
The PLM system still treats the chip as one thing, because there's one
supplier that makes it.
Cooley: All right ... so you're saying your IC Manage IP Central stuff is for the
parts of the chip.
Dean: IP Central is for the IP. It's chip IP that I'm talking about here.
And the IP will have a different instantiation -- and it might be rev'd for
that particular use -- or it might not be.
And we all know that assembling the chip and the IP configuration that comes
into that, is done by the design management system.
It's not done by the PLM system. It's a different problem you're trying to
solve. IP Central integrates -- and the PLM is really important and it's
awesome -- but PLM's slightly different.
Tony: And I would agree with that. I mean you can decide what level you want to
manage it at -- and my Siemens Teamcenter can continue to develop there, but
a partnership between what you do, Dean, and we do makes a lot of sense.
Dean: Let's do it!
[Audience laughter as Dean holds out his hand and Tony shakes it.]
