Subject: Dean on IC Manage Holodeck hybrid/native cloud speedup & less storage
The live DAC'22 Troublemakers Panel
Cooley: Dean. All these companies here [CDNS/SNPS/MENT] have a cloud
solution. Are you [IC Manage] in trouble?
Seriously, why go to... I was walking around just even here in
San Francisco ... there are so many cloud companies.
Why go to you?
Dean: My IC Manage Holodeck is a product we deliver for customers to
help them move their design flows into the cloud and execute
EDA design flows in the cloud.
Holodeck is complementary to the cloud solutions from the major
vendors.
Cooley: Major vendors?
Dean: EDA major vendors.
Holodeck improves both a native cloud [CDNS/SNPS/MENT] workflow
as well as a cloud bursting workflow.
The majority of our customers are still in a hybrid mode. Where
they haven't gone fully cloud. They're still doing a lot of work
on-prem, and they need help in going cloud.
And so, to get their EDA workflow in the cloud, a lot of things
need to happen -- and the cloud can get expensive.
There are three kinds of Holodeck improvements to a deployment that
really matter. And I can tell you a little bit about these, and
I'll even give hard data on how they impacted Xilinx, one of our
customers.
First, we speed your EDA tool launch. If you're going to run an
EDA job in the cloud, you have to get all your design data up to
the cloud to run it.
IC Manage Holodeck moves only the exact design data needed to run
that EDA job in the cloud -- so you can reduce the time to launch
your EDA tool significantly.
Second, we slash storage costs. If you're moving a 200 TB or
500 TB design to the cloud, it costs a lot in storage; especially
when you're going to keep your design up there in the cloud for
a long period of time to run jobs.
Third, we improve the execution of your EDA tool performance in the
cloud. When you're running cloud on a general-purpose machine,
I/O becomes a big issue, and your EDA tools will run significantly
slower.
IC Manage Holodeck solves all of these problems.
I'll give you an example with Xilinx. Time to launch their EDA
tool was 19 hours. With Holodeck, their time to launch their
EDA tool was reduced to only 10 minutes -- a 99.9% reduction.
Cooley: What do you mean by the time to the launch the EDA tool?
Dean: The time to get your design data to the cloud and launch the
EDA tool on that data, so that your EDA tool actually was
starting processing on the design data.
Cooley: So, it's the upload time, is what you are saying.
Dean: Basically, the copy time of the design data up into the cloud
is the majority of that, yes.
Second, the Xilinx design was 200 terabytes. To execute, they
needed to get 200 terabytes onto their on-prem machine -- not
just to the cloud, but they needed to get it to their on-prem
machine that they were running the EDA job on or make it
accessible to that machine. So, it's not just the cloud.
With Holodeck, the design data that they needed transferred to
the cloud was less than 2 terabytes. Again, a 99% savings.
So, you can more easily move from Cloud to Cloud if you need to
move from different clouds, as well as get that to an EDA tool
launch faster and use a lot less storage.
And the third major component is performance.
We reduced Xilinx's tool runtime from 60 hours to 35 hours. That
was done strictly using the caching technology included in Holodeck.
So, your EDA job was never I/O wait state bound.
It was really utilizing the full cloud CPU that you were paying for.
The problem with the cloud is that you pay for a lot of CPUs, but
you don't always get it because the machine may not have the I/O.
Cooley: Okay.
Dean: So, IC Manage Holodeck gives a lot of flexibility to move between
clouds, a lot of improvement in the speed and performance, and a
lot of execution and savings on executing in the cloud.
Cooley: And that applies to both folks who are doing cloud bursting as well
as folks running natively in the cloud.
Dean: Yes.
