The Wiretap Intercept No. 061002
opinions and skeptical speculations too small to fit into an Industry Gadfly column

I saw this on Slashdot.org last week and liked it.

"What was your first programming language?"

               Assembly ## 4%
                Fortran ## 4%
                 Pascal ##### 9%
                  Basic ############################# 57%
                  C/C++  ###### 11%
                   Java # 3%
                   Perl 1%
                  other ### 6%

Me? I lost my programming virginity on FORTRAN. God!... That takes me
back. I can almost remember its special code for "print" statements. Or
was that a "format" statement followed a "write" statement?... Er...

(I was tempted to ask Gary Smith of Gartner-Dataquest what his first
programming language was, but I was afriad he'd go into some long winded
story of how he had to make the ENIAC vacuum tubes by hand and that he
wasn't one of "them thar fancypants programmars" way back then.)

Anyway, the survey had a total of 85,643 total votes, and since most of
their readership is engineers & scientists, it can be said that "yes, it's
a scientific survey!" :)
