Hi, John,
Cadence has managed to surprise me again, since I know that there are a few
signs of intelligent life in there. The Cadence representative walked out
of the DAC Space Selection Meeting as soon as the new rules were announced.
The critical rule: no more events by exhibitors within 25 miles of DAC during
DAC hours. The gesture was really stupid because it means that if they do
not change their decision soon, they will loose their place in the picking
order for the location of their booth. This means that a few years from now
when new management tries to restore order in the universe, Cadence will
have to buy a company with DAC seniority just to get a desirable location
on the floor.
Oh, before I forget: how can DAC survive without Cadence? To tell the truth
it looks like DAC did better than Cadence this year. Jim Miller, their VP
of Products and Technologies did go to the DAC because he ran into me there
on the DAC floor and asked why he was not meeting with me during the show.
My answer was simple: no one from Cadence offered, and I certainly was not
going to spend time going to the Four Seasons Hotel looking for him!
The other problem I have with Cadence's behavior is that they are members of
EDAC which is a sponsor of DAC and receives most of its revenues from DAC.
So, not only is Cadence a bad EDA citizen by not supporting the industry's
primary technical conference, but they also hurt, or aim to hurt, the fiscal
well being of EDAC, another exponent of their industry.
Maybe I missed the press release announcing that Cadence is no longer in
EDA. After all, I hear that being an EDA company is not very alluring on
Wall Street. I can see the headlines: Cadence open new markets as the
leading semiconductor virtual foundry. Please note this is different from
a fabless semiconductor -- think about it.
