Editor's Note: A few weeks ago I publically questioned the recently
released 2002 Dataquest FPGA Synthesis marketshare numbers in an
Industry Gadfly column. (Dataquest said that Synplicity had dropped
into a virtual tie with Mentor Exemplar, each with ~43% market share.
I said this didn't pass my "smell" test because over the years I've
seen plenty of Synplicity fans gushing about Synplify but very few
Mentor Exemplar users saying *anything* about Leonardo or Precision.)
Long story short, 52 Mentor/Exemplar/Leonardo/Precision user letters
later, I can now say that Mentor Exemplar has passed my "smell" test.
That is, I've got 52 users here talking about real live Leonardo and/or
Precision usage. These aren't sanitized "success stories" carefully
filtered by the Mentor Exemplar sales staff -- go to the Mentor web page
for that dreck -- but actual users bitching about bugs, likes, dislikes,
gripes, comparisions, etc. on the Mentor tools. You know; REAL users
talking about REAL usage. This being the case, it's now plausible that
Mentor did catch up with Synplicity in the FPGA synthesis market as the
2002 Dataquest marketshare number indicate. (Mind you, I'm not saying
this is absolute proof or anything like that. I'm just saying nothing
"smells" wrong with that Dataquest claim now.) My congrats to Mentor.
