Subject: What 238 users think of IC Validator vs. Calibre

APATHY RULES (Part IV): And here's the second time where user apathy works
*against* Synopsys instead of *for* Synopsys. With a 70% user happiness
rating and a whopping 61% being "best technology", IC Validator doesn't
stand a snowball's chance in Hell against Mentor Calibre -- plus it's comic
I couldn't find *ONE* company that switched over to ICV in this survey!

And ironically, again, the one company Aart truly hates, Magma, has the 7%
second place in DRC/LVS with its Quartz DRC/LVS. (See ESNUG 483 #2.)

Concerning Synopsys IC Validator inside of IC Compiler, our group:

1- We're sticking with Mentor Calibre, it's the best price.

       : ######### 9%

2- We're sticking with Mentor Calibre, it's best technology.

       : ############################################################# 61%

3- We're considering Synopsys IC Validator now.

       : ####### 7%

4- We've already using Synopsys IC Validator.

       : 0%

5- We're considering (name other tools) to replace Calibre.

                     Magma Quartz : #### 4%

6- We've already switched to (name tool).

                     Magma Quartz : ####### 7%
                   Cadence Assura : #### 4%
                Synopsys Hercules : ### 3%
                     Tanner Tools : ### 3%

A validation with the tool from the same layout provider?

Sticking with Mentor. We will not maintain two set of command files.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Staying Calibre. It's hard to not use what our foundries all use.

We're sticking with Mentor Calibre because its not worth looking at
  other tools right now.

  With competition Calibre always improves.

We do not have much experience with ICV, but will probably sooner
  or later evaluate it.

We use Synopsys Hercules. Synopsys seems to want us to switch to
IC Validator. But, if we were to make a switch, it would make more
sense to switch to industry-leader Calibre, rather than IC Validator.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

We've fighting with Hercules, and really so many errors could be easily
caught by Calibre, and bad in Herc. Calibre RVE is much better than VUE.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

We're stuck with Hercules because our technology development team won't
  code for IC Validator.

Last time I looked, it was still Hercules stuff.

  We already use Quartz.

We use the Tanner solution. For final signoff, the fab or one of
  our partners runs Calibre.

  We also use Cadence Assura.

We're using an internal Intel tool.
