( SNUG 10 Item 8 ) ---------------------------------------------- [04/15/10]
Subject: What 238 users think of Custom Designer vs. Virtuoso
APATHY RULES (Part III): Now it's Synopsys' turn to face the same customer
apathy that protects its near monopoly in the RTL synthesis and STA markets.
With a 78% user happiness rating for Cadence Virtuoso plus the fact that
this survey didn't even find *ONE* company that switched to Custom Designer
doesn't bode well for Synopsys in the custom layout space.
Ironically, the one company Aart truly hates, Magma, has the 9% second place
in custom layout with its Titan tool. (See ESNUG 480 #4.)
With regards to Synopsys Custom Designer, our group... (choose):
1- We're sticking with Cadence Virtuoso, it's the best price.
: ######################## 24%
2- We're sticking with Cadence Virtuoso, it's best technology.
: ###################################################### 54%
3- We're considering Synopsys Custom Designer now.
: ####### 7%
4- We've already switched to Custom Designer.
: 0%
5- We're considering (name other tools) to replace Virtuoso.
: 0%
6- We've already switched to (name tool).
Magma Titan : ######### 9%
Springsoft Laker : #### 4%
Tanner L-Edit : ### 3%

We do not see Synopsys as an analog force.

SNPS tools are not yet robust to replace Virtuoso.

Virtuoso. Why switch? Too much pain for too little benefit.

---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Most difficult to switch off Cadence due to decades of customized
scripts and Pcells.

We're staying in CDS 5.0 deck. It is difficult for the total company
to to switch new Artist, Virtuso-XL tools.

It's hard to take an entire group and switch a manually-intensive
package like layout. We have not evaluated Custom Designer. We
are looking at it, though.

We're sticking with Cadence Virtuoso, it's best technology. But,
we're considering Synopsys Custom Designer now. We are always
looking to replace Cadence tools.

It's questionable whether Virtuoso is best technology but as a
company, our long history with Cadence means we will be slow to
move elsewhere.

Use Virtuoso. However, we are evaluating Custom Designer now.

Not sure if it's the price. I hear a lot of complaints about our
Cadence full custom environment. Who knows what my colleagues may
decide upon in the future. This, however, is not simply about just
replacing one tool.
