( SNUG 10 Item 7 ) ---------------------------------------------- [04/15/10]
Subject: What 238 users think of PrimeTime
APATHY RULES (Part II): With a 73% user happiness rating (and the bulk of
that happiness being "best technology") Synopsys PrimeTime is quite safe
in the STA market. Historically Cadence Encounter ETS has been PrimeTime's
biggest "threat", but it only has 7% of users using it. One up-and-coming
tool has been Extreme GoldTime; it wasn't on the charts two years ago; now
its challenging Cadence ETS for second place! (See ESNUG 479 #2)
Concerning PrimeTime, our group plans to (choose what applies):
1- We're sticking with PrimeTime, it's the best price.
: ##################### 21%
2- We're sticking with PrimeTime, it's the best technology.
: #################################################### 52%
3- We're considering (name tools) to replace PrimeTime.
Cadence Encounter ETS : ##### 5%
Extreme GoldTime : ### 3%
Magma QuartzTime : # 1%
Incentia TimeCraft : # 1%
4- We've already switched to (name tool).
Cadence Encounter ETS : ####### 7%
Extreme GoldTime : ### 3%
Magma QuartzTime : # 1%
Incentia TimeCraft : # 1%
IBM EinsTimer : # 1%

We always used Primetime and will most probably not switch to
any other tool.

PrimeTime is our qualified sign-off tool. But who knows what the
future may bring.

We were considering replacing PrimeTime with GoldTime and even
evaluated GoldTime and were pleased with the outcome. However
Synopsys came back and matched the price, so we are sticking
with PrimeTime.

Magma QuartzTime, maybe look at Tekton if it holds up to testing.
Use PTSI as backup as orthogonal check.

Magma however offers an interesting alternative solution.

We're considering Cadence and another one not yet public to replace
PrimeTime. PT is not really MMMC, which is a major annoyance.

Encounter ETS, on the backend side we're a Cadence shop.

We have to use this for IBM signoff. I would prefer to use Primetime.

Depending on the flow we are forced to use we either use Primetime
which is simpler, or an in-house tool that is a lot more powerful
and complicated. I like Primetime more though, it's fast and gives
me the feedback I need.

Still using PT, for the time being. Fear, we'll be forced out of that,
too, soon.

We plan to replace PT with Encounter

We're using an internal Intel tool.

We're probably going to take a look at Incentia later this year.

PT works quite well.

We use ETS because it's fitting to our remaining flow (all CDN) and
it is integrated into optimization steps. Even so we still support
Primetime environment for external customers.

We're sticking with PrimeTime, we haven't evaluated any other tool
to replace it.

Using an IBM tool, part of their flow flow, but PT is easier to use
(in our experience).

We don't need sign-off STA but STA as offered by DC is sufficient.

---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Our signoff uses an in-house timing analyzer, but we really miss
PrimeTime.

PTSI - Its reporting mechanism is limited in terms of its style and
format. It needs updated with flexibility. The tool is slow and
doesn't provide much in terms of database access. Hint to R&D, you
have the entire database at your disposal, open it up for querying
and investigation.

---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
We rely on our silicon vendors to do much of the real dirty work of
STA. We just do a little as a double check and to develop constraints.
We'll leave it to the silicon to determine what tools are necessary
for final signoff in newer technology.
