Subject: First Encounter vs. Jupiter-XT vs. Blast Plan Pro

CADENCE RULES -- Aart's been trying to push his Jupiter-XT floorplanner onto
users, but they still have a hankering for First Encounter instead:

       Cadence First Encounter: ############################ 71%
Magma Blast Plan Pro: ###### 16%
           Synopsys Jupiter-XT: ##### 13%

Approximately 80% of PhysOpt/Astro customers use First Encounter in their
Synopsys P&R flow and 50% of the Magma customers use First Encounter in
their Magma P&R flow.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

  We do not use Jupiter-XT.

      - Sunil Malkani of Broadcom

We just began to use Jupiter-XT. So we cannot make a comparison at
this time. We are also having some support issues involving this tool.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

No data against FE or Blast PlanPro. Jupiter works fine for us.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

First Encounter is good to use.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

don't use Jupiter, never did (after evaluating it)

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Jupiter-XT is much improved. All three are now about even.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Under evaluation but it seems almost same of all three tools.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

One of our groups is using Jupiter-XT with good results, but still find
working in Milkyway a pain (corrupted databases issues).

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Have never compared the tools. We use Jupiter and I am happy using it.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

We use FE. Bitten twice by Synopsys floorplanners. Will 3rd time be
  the charm?

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Jupiter is so user unfriendly compared to Magma or Cadence tools, we
refuse to consider it further. We will stick with SOC Encounter here.

      - Russell Petersen of Scientific Atlanta

Jupiter XT is improving but still behind First Encounter.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Have not seen Jupiter improve, but do not have a lot of designs in that
  phase to test it out.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Jupiter is OK but you have more feature using a single UI thus SoC FE
  is prefered.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

We are not a real user of Jupiter, no need for older technologies.
Newer technologies/large designs done with Magma and use of fully
integrated flow (all tools) incl. Blast Plan Pro. Good results.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Magma BPP 5.0 has taken a big step forward and has functions, features
and quality unmatched by either Jupiter-XT or First Encounter.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Jupiter is probably behind Magma and on par with Cadence.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

We recently switched to Blast Plan Pro from Jupiter. Basically, support
for Jupiter sucked. They only addressed our issues after we decided to
switch. Jupiter has a better GUI, and is more mature. Plan Pro has some
quirkiness, but its TCL access rocks. I can do some very complex things
using their TCL interface that I could never dream of doing in Jupiter.
Unfortunately, I also find I spend alot of time using the Magma TCL
interface for cleaning up some of their basic features that just don't
  quite work.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Jupiter-XT > Blast Plan Pro > First Encounter

      - Benjamin Chen of Socle Tech.

  Still prefer Cadence for layout.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

  BlastPro > First Encounter > Jupiter-XT

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

  I trust Magma Blast PlanPro.

      - John Schritz of Tektronix

We use Magma Blast Plan Pro and have little experience with Cadence FE.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

  FE is first choice.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

My experience with First Encounter is dated and it was not positive. They
  may have gotten better.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

use Astro. Do not use Jupiter.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

Jupiter-XT was poor compared to Cadence-FE. We don't rate a floorplanner
on "virtual flat" capacity. Also "virtual flat" implies that you have
quite a bit of the Verilog code done. Usually we have functional blocks
with ports and top-level routed months before the Verilog is finished.

      - [ An Anon Engineer ]

I am a primary user of First Encounter. Never got a chance to try
Jupiter (although I am interested !-)
