Subject: What the? What happened to the DAC Trip Report?

ONE MAN -- Back in 1993, when I wrote my first DAC Trip Report it was just
a small 3 page column cynically commenting on all the things I had seen and
experienced at my first DAC. By 2004, this fun little report had grown into
a monsterous 44 chapter in depth survey of what 368 engineers saw at that
year's DAC. It became a ball breaking project to compile all those inputs
into one report. Having to get it done hung over me like a dark cloud
making my life miserable. "Is it done yet?"... "Is it done yet?"...

So last year, I partially reverted back to my origins. On the Thursday that
was 4 days *before* the 2005 DAC, I published:

"My Cheesy Must See List for DAC 2005" which got 12,939 pageviews

I saw a lot of people last year at that DAC had printed it out and used it
as a floor show guide (which was my intent.)

Then 2 weeks *after* that 2005 DAC, I published:

"My post-DAC debriefing with Pallab and Cliff" with got 22,014 pageviews

Which was an 11 page column commenting on what the 3 of us had seen at that
DAC. It was up on DeepChip in a timely fashion -- and better yet, it wasn't
a pain-in-the-ass burden waiting to get done!

"So what's this 'Everything Else EDA Census' then, John?," you ask.

Basically I do it to be fair. Synopsys and its tool rivals get covered in
detail in the "Synopsys Census"; all the verification tools are discussed
and counted ad nauseum in the "Verification Census"; Cadence and its tool
rivals will be covered in detail in my upcoming "Cadence Census" -- but
this leave a boatload of Mentor, Magma, Synplicity, and other users who
don't have a chance to kvetch about the tools *they're* using -- so to be
fair, I've created this "Everything Else EDA Census".

While you might see some DAC references in the "Else Census", this is not
just a lazy rebranding of my olde DAC Trip Report -- much of the data in
the "Else Census" was written by the users waaaay after the last DAC. That
is, it's a look at all the "Else" tools over the past year -- much like how
the other Censuses (Censi?) cover their own tools over the past year, too.

P.S. What's the correct plural of "census"?
