( DAC 09 Item 14 ) ---------------------------------------------- [12/11/09]
Subject: Rumors heard around DAC
MISSED SCOOP: Read below and you can count exactly how many times (5) that I
missed the news that Apache was buying Sequence. Damn! And this wasn't a
one or two day scoop -- it was a good 5 weeks ahead type of scoop. Damn!
Mind you, these are all rumors. More than half are going to turn out to be
crazy wrong, so don't bet your lunch on any of them. Welcome to my world.
(optional & you're anonymous on this) -- What specific EDA rumors
have your heard around the DAC timeframe? Did you believe them?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Cadence and Magma merging. Overheard in lunch line. Did I believe it?
Maybe. Rajiv will become the new CEO. At least he's someone with an EDA
sense; not a bench warmer for Cadence CEO??
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I heard Apache was buying Sequence assets (and RTL tools might not survive
it). I heard Forte was buying Arithmatica assets. I heard people were
taking cell phone pics of the Magma booth, and sending them to other Magma
people asking "what happened?". Won't the independent power synthesis
tools get gobbled up into someone's synthesis engine as a "button"? I
heard everyone say their tools were great, worked wonderfully, and would
make me taller, younger, and more successful...
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I heard Apache is going to buy Sequence.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Magma may not be at DAC next year." LIES! DAC without Magma is
unthinkable!
- John Donovan of Low-PowerDesign.com
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
A Magma VP expects imminent consolidation in the EDA Big 4, by end of the
recession, either Synopsys/Mentor or Cadence/Magma or both.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Synopsys and Mentor both told me that Cadence was out of cash, and in
peril of massive layoffs. I was shocked to hear such rumors from such
neutral sources. ;)
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I heard that Oasis Design Systems may get acquired by Synopsys.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Apache to acquire Sequence.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Lip Bu Tan can't spell EDA.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
The biggest of the rumors was about Magma tools. The rumor was that
Magma is down, and further down this year. They have lost big accounts
like Broadcom, and many more.
Also heard that Rajeev, unlike previous DACs, was going around to
different booths and asking for a partnership and help. His ego seemed
to be reduced by big levels. Most of the folks seemed to think that
Magma will be still around, but in what form - not sure.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Wally and Andrew are in talks about merging Mentor and Apache.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
TSMC not yielding at 40 nm. I believe it. Shame on them, lots of chips
were designed and huge profits on the line.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Current rumor is that Sequence has been acquired by Apache, announcement
to be done soon. There've been almost 16-18% lay-offs of Sequence guys
from across all the divisions including R&D. The Sequence guys did not
make much money as acquisition was in loss.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Synopsys will buy a routing tool from another OA participant instead
of developing one of their own for full custom worlds.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Magma new assembly router is at par with CDNS Space Based Router.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Toshiba to switch to GoldTime.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I heard that Mentor is dying.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Costello to return as Cadence CEO. Not true, but wish it.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Did that Denali guy really angel fund Google?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Layoffs coming at Synopsys.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Cadence decided to get serious in the electromigration and IR analysis
domain. They're working on engines to provide these features (and a
few more) online and batch mode.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Pulsic is still the only router that can support today all DFM and
electrical challenges, EM, IR, etc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
TSMC to buy Cadence.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Only stayed 1 day so did not do much networking or listening on the vines.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Apache buying Sequence in fire sale.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Peggy's husband has founder's shares of Azuro.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
The Certess old guard isn't happy at Springsoft. Many employees were
very disappointed by the money left for them.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Anton Domic leaving SNPS to start his own fabless semi co, DomiTech.
His old position will be taken up by Joe Sawicki.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
I heard rumors that DFM is dead. Yet actual discussions and meeting
interactions and tools being presented, would contradict that. It
seems more important now than ever.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Sagantec is running out of money and Takumi is out.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Cadence's ex-VP R&D Jim Miller is now VP of CAD at AMD
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Palin - De Geus 2012!
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Again, these are all rumors. More than half are going to turn out to be
crazy wrong, so don't bet your lunch on any of them. Welcome to my world.
