Subject: 48 past and present Synopsys employees on Sassine as SNPS' new CEO (part 3)
OOPS, IT WAS 17 MAJOR TASKS ... as an exercise to the reader, I asked you guys to
write down each "major task" you found in the co-worker comments Sassine had done.
I expected it to total to 14 major tasks. I was wrong.
After going through all the co-worker comments, it turned out to be 17 major tasks.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
From ESNUG 595 #2 here are the original 14 major tasks in the order of their first
occurrence in the co-worker comments that I was thinking of:
1. Sassine created DSO.ai, then TSO.ai, VSO.ai, and Synopsys.ai
2. Sassine created SNPS' chiplet flow and SNPS 3D-IC Compiler
3. Sassine created Synopsys-Ansys partnership and killed off SNPS PathMill
4. Sassine drove SNPS ICV DRC and killed off Avanti Hercules DRC
5. Sassine drove SNPS Custom Compiler
6. Sassine created an internal SNPS start-up culture for new SNPS projects
7. Sassine created AI-accelerated SNPS DesignWare automotive IP
8. Sassine lead SNPS FY 2021 $4.20 B to SNPS FY 2022 $5.08 B revenue
9. Sassine revitalized SNPS R&D by hiring Shankar and Ravi
10. Sassine solved the IC Compiler I and IC Compiler II troubles
11. Sassine created the multiplicative effect culture *between* SNPS BUs
12. Sassine created Fusion Compiler solving 4 database / 6 engine troubles
13. Sassine created Synopsys Silicon Lifecycle Management (SLM)
14. Sassine created a mistakes-are-OK-just-learn-from-them culture in SNPS
What I forgot was in ESNUG 595 #3 were 3 more major tasks:
15. Sassine got Intel $70 million (2007) to $320 million (2016)
16. Sassine got Broadcom/Apple/Nvidea run rates to grow 2X in 2007-2016
17. Sassine merged the 3 Nassda/Epic/Magma SPICES to make PrimeSim
What follows are the remaining co-worker comments

THUMBS UP
Yes, Sassine is proving to be a good successor for Aart.
He's extremely driven, and he is even more customer oriented.
Customer orientation is not a lip service for him -- it's what _every_ Synopsoid
is supposed to breathe.
While Aart is the visionary, Sassine is the Operations champion.
What SNPS needs is a person who will set everyone's back side on fire to drive
growth and profitability. In the face of fierce competition from CDNS, MENT, and
ANSS -- and where opportunities are suddenly marred by geo-political instability;
Sassine _is_ what is _required_.
Let's not forget. Sassine is human. He is the right choice, but only time will
tell if he was the perfect one.

THUMBS UP
I've seen Sassine continue to grow as a leader.
He is not a "know-it-all" person, he's more of a "learn-it-all" person. When he
and I talk tech and business, he will really listen before he reaches a fair and
unbiased conclusion.
He's not afraid to face the current situation, speak out on his vision, and
do what it takes to get there. That takes courage -- and a mindset of
looking beyond what other people see.
When I first joined Synopsys, Sassine met with me personally to discuss driving
a new area for Synopsys. What would be the platform and the plan to build it?
He made sure that I first spoke with target customers to validate the idea of
the platform. Next, we discussed how we could use assets within the company to
seed it, and then bring in other companies through mergers and acquisition (M&A)
to build out the platform. He supported the process of getting the strategic
M&As completed. Also, how would it actually be sold to the market -- would the
customer actually buy it and why? He is always customer centric and looks at the
value of what the customer will derive.

THUMBS UP
As someone who has worked side-by-side with Sassine and seen his progress inside
Synopsys over the decades, I can give a definite yes to him being SNPS's new CEO.
Sassine's key advantage over the other EDA CEOs is that he is highly approachable.
I've witnessed it quite a bit, internally, and with customers, and with partners.
He pushes our customers into sharing what they want out of Synopsys -- what needs
to improve, and what doesn't.
Sassine also coaches the Synopsys employees to be collaborative with our users;
listening to them, arguing our case, while making sure that there is something
for both parties in our agreements -- and doing it all in a manner that is both
approachable and professional.
Sassine surrounds himself with the right people who will deliver the results;
while at the same time he is willing for them to take risks. Sassine understands
the value and the reward of risk; he is not afraid of it. If things don't work,
he will go back and fix it -- but by no means will he be conservative.
At the current point in the Synopsys life cycle, we must take risks to grow to
become a 10 billion dollar revenue company.
