Subject: Prakash's gotchas of serial mode vs. true multimode static sign-off
                     Virtual DAC'20 Troublemakers Panel

   Cooley: Prakash.  You had multimode Verix CDC and then you recently 
           announced something you call multimode DFT.  What the hell is 
           multimode DFT?

  Prakash: John, multimode is all over in various aspects of the functioning
           of chips.  We've been doing multimode in three different products
           in three different ways.  
           For example, multimode CDC is about multiple clocking modes.  
           Multimode DFT is about multiple test modes.  And multimode RDC 
           is about multiple reset scenarios.

   Cooley: Oh, so you're not changing the clocking scheme during testing? 
           Okay, alright.

  Prakash: What this is essentially a left-shift, right?  Efficiency of 
           runtime and debug efficiency.  
           In multimode we run all modes simultaneously.  That dramatically
           reduces the set-up cost, and it reduces the runtime cost.

           And I mentioned that we also leverage hierarchy and abstraction
           to speed up.  
           This is where the engineering customization enters the picture 
           because multimode abstractions are an order of magnitude more 
           complex than single-mode abstractions.

           And then as far as the advantage in reporting is concerned, even
           if a failure affects multiple modes, it gets reported only once.  
           So, you get a dramatic compression in the amount of debug work 
           that the engineers have to do.  Again, run it faster, make it 
           easier to use.

           Then the last thing where multimode is most important is that it
           provides the complete coverage, which is the goal.  

           For example, if you run single-mode CDC multiple times you have
           a potential of missing crossings and data and clock endpoints,
           which will not happen with multimode CDC.
Serial mode CDC analysis can miss clock crossing errors
           So, all the three dimensions of completeness, efficiency as far 
           as the runtime goes, and efficiency of debug.  The next dimension
           in providing those is by going to multimode solutions, after 
           hierarchy and debug design for single mode solutions.
