Subject: SCOOP -- leaked internal CDNS memo explains Anirudh and Charlie
SCOOP - On Friday, CDNS CEO Lip-bu Tan sent an email to all 6,000
Cadence employees saying Charlie Huang is leaving Cadence. This comes as a surprise because
most people inside EDA thought Charlie was being
groomed as Lip-bu Tan's eventual replacement.
Why Charlie resigned is unknown at this moment.

THE OTHER SHOE DROPS: Roughly 18 weeks ago, I published this scoop above that
to everyone's surprise, 14 year CDNS veteran Charlie Huang was leaving CDNS.
The speculation at that time was that CDNS CEO Lip-bu Tan (or the CDNS BoD)
had bigger future plans for Anirudh Devgan -- instead of for Charlie. This
was confirmed yesterday in a leaked internal CDNS memo (sent only to CDNS
employees) that gave Anirudh control over all things digital at CDNS.
From: [ Lip-bu Tan of Cadence ]
To: [ All CDNS employees ]
Team Cadence,
Two years ago I asked Anirudh Devgan to lead the Digital Signoff Group
(DSG) which addresses the largest segment in EDA and been a stronghold
of the competition.
Since then Anirudh has successfully built a strong team and culture of
innovation that has led to the delivery of 6 new highly differentiated
products. These products have gained impressive traction with market-
shaping customers.
Our momentum is reflected in the fact that DSG business at targeted
customers has increased by over 35% over past year, with over a dozen
companies adopting our full digital flow -- a great accomplishment in
this competitive arena. Thanks to the DSG team's extraordinary
efforts, we're set up to proliferate within these accounts and beyond.
To recognize and capitalize on this success through driving further
expansion of our portfolio at targeted top accounts, and to explore
tighter synergies between our digital implementation and system
verification portfolios, I have asked Anirudh to take on an expanded
role.
Effectively immediately, Anirudh is appointed General Manager of the
System Verification Group in addition to his role as GM of DSG. The two
business groups will continue as discrete organizational structures
with their respective leadership teams continuing in their current
roles.
SVG has grown rapidly in recent years through both organic development
and by virtue of the Jasper and Forte acquisitions, leading to a record
year of growth for our system development suite.
SVG has been lead by strong leadership with Ziv Binyamini, Daryn Lau,
Oz Levia, and Sean Dart running the business units and Michal Siwinski
and Pete Connor leading product management and operations, respectively.
I have been impressed with their contributions and commitment to the
success of SVG.
I am excited by the potential for significant areas of synergy between
SVG and DSG, such as:
- expanded business with customers doing design and verification
of advanced SoCs
- better leverage across ARM-based SoC enablement with verification
and implementation
- for low power analysis, customers can combine early estimation
from our Joules RTL power solution as well as the accuracy of
our Palladium dynamic power analysis and Incisive simulation.
- tighter integration between Stratus HLS and Genus RTL Synthesis can
provide improved QoR for our overall TLM-to-GDSII design flow.
- JasperGold and Conformal together can provide the broad range of
formal verification technologies for the market.
I am confident that Anirudh's leadership will further accelerate our
innovation in verification to drive technology leadership and build on
the strong business momentum we currently have. In addition to his
success over the past few years at Cadence, Aniridh brings ~20 years of
industry experience. IEEE Fellow in 2006, 90+ papers, 27 U.S. Patents
in EDA and circuit design. Bachelor's from IIT Delhi, MS and PhD
from Carnegie Mellon.
Please join me in congratulating Anirudh on expanded responsibilities.
I look forward to working closely with him to drive the DSG and SVG
teams to even greater success.

That is, *before* yesterday's news Anirudh only controlled just the digital
design tools like PnR, RTL synthesis, STA, etc. Now Anirudh also controls
all digital verification tools like Verilog/VHDL simulation, emulation, etc.
Taken altogether, Anirudh now controls roughly 2/3rds of CDNS -- with the
remaining ~25% being Tom Beckley for Virtuoso and PCB, and ballpark ~15%
by Erik Panu for CDNS hard/soft/verification IP.
The other shoe dropped once this internal memo was distributed inside CDNS.
My congrats go out to Anirudh. He's clearly now their new heir apparent.
