DAC'14 Troublemakers Panel in San Francisco, CA
Cooley: "Anirudh, what's it like being the Nth Director of
Cadence Digital Implementation. Jim Hogan was the
#2 or #3, I counted to like 10 and stopped counting
then. Why are you any different?"
Hogan: "That was so far back Isadore had hair back then!"
[audience laughs ]
Anirudh: "Any day is a good day when I'm mentioned in the
same sentence as Jim Hogan." [audience laughs ]
Hogan: "You're number one in my book!" [audience laughs ]
Anirudh Devgan of Cadence on how CDNS has changed, Lip-Bu Tan as
the new CEO, now at $1.5 to $1.6 billion, with 25% to 26% profit
margin in a very ratable business. "That generates a lot of
money that Cadence can reinvest back into EDA." "And I think
that CDNS, everyone knows, made a lot of mistakes in the previous
regime." Cadence has hired 90 new top talent R&D in digital
over the past 2 years. It creates a different DNA in the group,
and in the company overall. We've empowered the right people
at the right positions in the company.
Cooley: "How did CDNS steal LG from Synopsys?" (See ESNUG 541 #3)
Anirudh: "I don't know if I would describe the word stealing.
I can't comment on LG. All I can say is there are
going to be shifts. Customers want better tools.
But I can't comment on a specific sale."
Cooley: "Gary. Does Cadence have a chance?"
Gary Smith: "Oh, yea! This is a new Cadence. This is far better
than anything I've seen. The morale is much better. Politics
are waaaaaaaay down. Lip-Bu doesn't like politicians somehow and
they now somehow disappear -- it was the internal politicians that
killed Cadence. Now you're seeing good people taking the top
positions who are good technologists and good engineers. It's a
new Cadence. I also like Lib-Bu's acquisition strategies."
