Subject: User seeks clever (yet legal) way to get more Magma Talus licenses
Hi, John,
Please keep us anonymous.
We have a problem where maybe your DeepChip readers can help.
My group has a series of chips planned where my veteran PNR guys say would
be trivial to layout -- only if we had some Magma Talus licenses. They
say that 95% of our blocks would fly through Talus; with only the remaining
5% would need IC Compiler expertise.
Our issue is Synopsys Sales will not sell us any Talus licenses whatsoever.
They gave some BS about the Talus licensing SW is broken. They claim it
can now cut keys only for existing users. They want to sell us IC Compiler
licenses instead. We've brainstormed a few ideas. What we want to know is
what's possible? What's legal? How to solve this?
- Is it possible (and legal) to buy another company's unused
Talus licenses? We figure we'd have to buy the machines the
licenses run on, too, because of the BS key-cutting problem.
- Would we have to structure the deal not as a license transfer,
but as an asset purchase instead? Would we have to hire one
or two of their engineers to make it an asset sale?
- Instead of buying the Talus licenses and their machines, is
it legal to rent time in another company's CAD evironment?
Would we have to declare we're technology partners to do so?
- Do you know of any existing consulting houses that would sell
us access to Talus licenses?
- Can we give a university a research grant or partnership where
we could get access to Talus licenses?
- Are there overseas loopholes where we could legally get access
to Talus licenses?
Keep in mind that we insist that any solution your readers give us must be
100% legal. We have no desire to break any laws anywhere to do this.
All we want is a way to legally use some old Magma Talus licenses to save
us massive PNR time and money.
