Subject: Synopsys HAPS customer furious over HapsTrak II connector games

Hi, John,

Please keep me anonymous.

Synopsys is doing some crazy things to sell their new HAPS 70 series.

The Samtec HapsTrak II connector has been available on the open market since
2008. As of April 1, 2013 Synopsys is preventing anyone from buying the old
128 pin HapsTrak II connector without a letter from Synopsys.

It's a connector Synopsys doesn't use any more. They have a new HapsTrak 3
connector. Many 3rd party ASIC prototyping vendors and OEMs building their
own FPGA boards are using the old HapsTrak II connectors. This is a trivial
~$10 connector -- Synopsys is pissing off many engineers.

It's not a show stopper, just a pain to switch to the old 120 pin Samtec
connector. I know many ASIC designers who went away from the HAPS system
because of Synopsys.

They are a pain to work with. But this is a new low for them.
