Subject: Any other non-profits getting the "Fister" excuse from CDNS Sales?

Hi John,

This might seem a bit unusual to be asked about this topic, but if your
readers can help me out with a suggestion, I would appreciate it.

I work at a university not-for-profit where we have a small group of folks
who design SoCs for space and medical research.

We have mostly standardized on Cadence tools as our chips are small and,
until recently, were predominantly analog -- but we also use Synopsys
and Mentor tools for specific point solutions.

About 2 years ago, I negotiated a deal with Cadence to provide us with a
set of tools that we needed for the staff we had at the time. The discount
we were given was quite reasonable, at least to us.

Over the past 2 years, though, we have grown quite a bit and have added on
to our Cadence FTA where it made sense to do so. We also have been buying
short term licenses on EDA cards.

Now I am beginning negotiations with our latest CDNS account manager for a
much larger bundle of Cadence software, and am hearing that the discount
level we received back in April 2011 was:

"Unusually good; because Cadence was in trouble after
the Mike Fister ouster and the company was making all
kinds of swell deals they could not sustain."

Frankly, I need to find out if that comment has any merit or if it is just
Salesman talk.

I don't follow the ups and downs of our vendors business that closely; but
from a simple historical stock chart for the past 3 years, I see CDNS growth
generally exceeding the S&P 500 and NASDAQ trends. As a not-for-profit, I
would think we should be able to obtain a larger discount than we had the
last time, not less.

I'm hoping your contacts into Cadence customer land are more extensive than
mine and might help me understand what is going on here.
