Subject: And 86 percent USERS overall are NEUTRAL on Synopsys-Ciranova
COUNTING THOSE WHO COUNT: While overall (86%) of users were "neutral" about
the Synopsys-Ciranova merger, to be fair you must subtract out 209 digital
frontend users to see what those-who-were-impacted (backend users) thought.
The remaining 39 backend users were concerned about reduced competition, a
growing SNPS monopoly, and PyCells and iPDK becoming Synopsys proprietary.
In addition, some of them liked the idea of SNPS busting the CDNS Virtuoso
monopoly in full custom layout.

BAD news, NEUTRAL news for my company because (say why):"
For all 248 EDA users:
GOOD: ## 4%

But for the 39 backend users:

Bad news. PyCells were a failed attempt by Aart to take on the CDNS
Virtuoso monopoly. They're just going back home to Momma SNPS now.

BAD news -- now it's unlikely that Cadence will ever really support
PyCells and iPDK. PyCells will now also be a SNPS proprietary

utility for those converting from IC5 to IC6.

to become am powerhouse/monopoly.

NEUTRAL to GOOD. Helix is not a strong player in this area. The
merging of Synopsys with SpringSoft should mean an eventual tool will
have good placement solution like Helix has.

NEUTRAL. Ciranova products should work well with Custom Designer,
and it is good to see some competition with Cadence in this area.
I am a bit concerned, however, about the number of independent
companies devoured by Synopsys, and the implications for the
industry in general.

GOOD News - PYCELLS will have a real support and backbone, a big
help to SI2 initiative organization.
The Ciranova analog placer will get some people to ensure that it
gets "routable" results and maybe together with Laker 3 it can
really kick Cadence MODGEN -- who "thinks" nobody can do better.

Bad news.
Ciranova PyCells were a vendor-neutral initiative for PDK pcells.
I would have preferred to see their use within all vendors. Now
they are the vehicle of Synopsys.
This looks like forcing out further OA toolset competition by
acquisition.

BAD news: it severely stifles competition by further consolidating
power to one dominant EDA supplier.

BAD news if Synopsys stops supporting the Ciranova PyCells as a
basic open structure for iPDK and IPL.
Good news if Custom Designer is improved and they will continue
to support others (like Mentor) for the iPDK. If not, iPDK will
be a Synopsys-only format and all others will continue to develope
their own PDK format...

lose a neutral phy IP supplier.

Well, so much for the whole Si2 iPDK effort. It never worked well
in Cadence so now you have all the tools that were built around iPDK,
now owned by Synopsys.
So in reality, you will have the regular PDK for Cadence and the now
so-called iPDK will just be for Synopsys.
I wonder how long PyCells will remain open and if it will mater?
Synopsys seems to be a company that hasn't been able to create
competitive products internally. Almost all their competitive
products were acquired.
It will be interesting to see how good they are at integration
and retention.

really help our productivity. Sad to see it go with Synopsys, which
essentially shuts us out. We are not religious against Synopsys, but
being a small company do not have a chance to engage with Synopsys.
