Subject: EDA conspiracy theorists have concerns over upcoming Austin DAC'13

With the upcoming DAC'13 to be held in Austin, TX, the conspiracy theorists
in our industry are all abuzz. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the Ray Bingham and
Mike Fister days of Cadence, there was a quiet push to move DAC to San Jose;
ostensively so "it would be closer to more EDA users in the valley".

Rumor was that even Aart de Geus also liked this idea.

Why? Scuttlebutt was then both Cadence and Synopsys could use busses to
entice EDA customers off the DAC Exhibit Foor to "super special SNPS campus"
and "super special CDNS campus" meetings -- thus starving out the small EDA
start-ups on the DAC Exhibit Floor who were eating into CNDS's and SNPS's
future sales with their better point tools.

Think this is paranoid? When Cadence was still #1 in EDA, they tried to do
exactly this in 2005 and 2006 and 2007 at DAC!

   For the past 2 years, every time I'd talk to Cadence about it, they'd
   give great lipservice to DAC, but they'd also be quietly doing these
   get-customers-off-the-DAC-floor-and-into-a-nearby-hotel stunts.  Last
   year Cadence siphoned off a number of DAC floor attendees into the
   nearby Hilton. This year Cadence rented the Four Seasons Hotel (2 blocks
   away from the DAC Moscone Center) and held a "Technology On Tour" show.

So now with Synopsys as the #1 Microsoft of EDA, the 800 lb gorilla who's
tools are in at least *one* place in everyone's EDA flow (STA signoff);
what's to stop Aart from attempting the exact same ploy?

Everyone knows the DAC'13 Austin attendance numbers will be smaller next
year -- nicely setting the stage for a quiet behind-the-scenes push to move
DAC to San Jose -- that the DAC Committee will have to resist or it'll lead
to DAC's eventual dismantling.

.... And a sweet, sweet little F.U. to those pesky EDA start-ups that SNPS
and CDNS hates because they eat into their bundled sales deals.

   "Mine's bigger."

      - what Peggy Aycinena reports Aart de Geus said when she asked
        him what he thought of this year's DAC. (06/05/12) Aart
        was talking about his San Jose SNUG vs. open industry DAC.
