Thinking about the design center explosion happening in the southern
and eastern continental Asia, and the # of PhDs graduating Chinese
  universities....

Isn't it only a matter of time before China becomes the next center of
the EDA universe? All it will take is one generation of customers to
switch allegiance to the new Huawei Design Automation EDA tools away
from Cadence/Synopsys/others and then what happens to the US EDA market,
from a financial point of view?

Sure, the EDA vendors are investing heavily over there, but there are
different business model requirements in the Far East, and it seems
there is a possibility that the competition could severely undercut
the US competitors -- assuming of course their tools are up to snuff....

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

We hear all-the-time about the Chinese stealing "sw"; isn't that
happening in EDA? Is the EDA business moving to China/India
anyway and will it then become dominated by Chinese/India EDA
companies? In other words, is your company a walking-wounded,
  soon to be dead entity?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

The IC design business is shrinking (# of designs/year); so, what
are the dogs around the dog food bowl going to do? (BTW - I was
at your DAC panel when Costello used this analogy).

Is the business model to keep buying start-ups while shrinking
and laying off employees; or, is there something else?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

As the number of ASIC starts and therefore ASIC teams continues to
decrease, EDA companies are going to have less and less sales
opportunities with each design becoming more and more valuable.

How are the EDA companies going to respond to this in pricing terms?

How will the smaller companies vary from the bigger ones on this?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

What value do you see in open standards 3 or 5 years from now.

What is is holding us up from receiving that value today?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Does EDA have anything of interest to offer to designers of heavily
IP-based systems?  Beyond the "Virtual Prototype"? How about an
  actual DESIGN tool?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Many embedded software tools are free or Open Source.  When will
low-cost or Open Source hardware tools be available?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Old saying = Adapt or Die; so, who's going to blink first and
  start an Open Source movement?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Software design tools keep getting cheaper; EDA/hardware design
tools keep getting more expensive. Why is this and what can
the EDA guys do to change it?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

ALL: We don't have yet 100% OA compliance and more companies are closing
their P&R database to internal formats. What do you do to move forward
this OA initiative? What do you see that is not moving? Is Cadence the
only company that's opening their database for easy integration?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

EDA in the Cloud. Why, Why not, If, When, What have you been doing?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Is the EDA innovation cycle slowing down? If so, what can we do
  about it?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

EDA VC seems to be disappearing. Maybe it's all blocking and tackling
from now on, but if innovation is still required, who will take up
  the slack?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Are the big EDA vendors investing enough in the right things (whether
internal R&D, acquisition, or external investment)?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Do the foundries need to take the load, since they have the most to gain
from new IC design innovations and applications?

What about the systems companies-are they carrying their load?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Will foundries end up owning the EDA supply chain?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
