Subject: Samsung was the problem child of the 2011 world foundry rankings

With the final 2011 fab data now in, the major analyst houses that cover the
semiconductor industry have put out their "Top X Fabs of 2011" reports.

What's interesting about these reports is the analysts don't seem to know
what to do with Samsung, the fab which has made all the Apple chips.

First, the IC Insights guys list Samsung as the #4 fab in their 2011 Top 14:

Notice how IC Insights mixed the pure-play fabs with the bigger IDMs.

While the Gartner folks ranked Samsung as the #9 fab in their 2011 Top 10:

¹Samsung excludes $1 billion in ASIC business from Apple

Notice that Gartner "footnotes" $1 billion in missing Samsung/Apple sales.

And finally, the IHS iSuppli people don't even list Samsung in their Top 20:

I asked IHS iSuppli about NO SAMSUNG???? "We do not include IDMs that
perform foundry work in our pure-play foundry category," replied Len
Jelinek, chief semi analyst at iSuppli. "This means we do not have IBM,
Samsung, TI in this list. Samsung in 2011 we have identified as $746
million in foundry sales. We do not consider the work that Samsung does
for Apple as foundry because Samsung has IP in the product they provide.
This revenue is categorized in Samsung Logic ASIC."

The other fun thing to notice in these reports is that NONE of the specific
fab numbers match up ever. For example, in 2011 TSMC did $14,600 million or
$14,533 million or $14,048 million in wafer sales -- depending on which
analyst you cite -- that's a +/- 2 percent difference. (Shouldn't this data
match EXACTLY with NO differences???)
