Subject: Chip designers confused/angered by terse TSMC 28 nm response

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

What exactly is "normal" 28 nm production? Normal vs. what?
It took them 2 years to get 40 nm up. Is that "normal"?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Do you have any more info on this 28 nm rumor? This so called TSMC
official response is less than clear.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Why can't these guys just come clean? Why all the secrecy?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Would the fabs in Hsinchu collapse if they were open and honest
  about them?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

WTF? A market leader talks to its customers like this?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

When is it "normal" for a fab to shut down for a month?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

  What's "normal"?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Do you have any idea what they're saying?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I think it's Chinese whispers, John. One line might be down, while
the rest may be happily ticking along.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

  Re: ESNUG 500 #9 - WTF? - EOM

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I'm confused. Are you confused? I am!

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

"Normal" means what in this context?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Clever use of words. It's "normal" for early production lines
to have starts and stops. They're saying they halted without
  saying they halted. Typical TSMC.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Classic ambigious TSMC. Both denying and not denying while
hiding behind the mask of pretending that they don't fully
  understand English.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I guess we will just wait and see. We were not using 28 nm per se
but are designing for a Q4 tape out on 40 LP which I understand
uses the same fab lines. It might be busy if TSMC is also trying
to troubleshoot and recover 28 nm.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

  I hate this cryptic S***!

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

This smells like 40 nm all over again. Great.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

40 nm. Been there. Done that. Got the T-shirt.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

I heard Nvidia ripped the TSMC guys a new one over this.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Jen-Hsun Huang is furious at Morris Chang for dropping the
ball on 28 nm yields. It cost Nvidia $100 million in Q1/12.

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

At least GloFlo owns up to their problems. Once GloFlo gets
its 28 nm up, I'm recommending to my boss that we go with them.
