( ESNUG 494 Item 6 ) -------------------------------------------- [10/25/11]

Subject: User on cheaper Sapient-IC vs. pricier InCyte/ChipEstimate.com

I work with different EDA vendors, so please keep me anonymous.

I recently looked at Cadence InCyte/ChipEstimate.com and Sapient-IC for
product planning. I found Sapient-IC better for the following:

  1. Sapient-IC has a better die size estimator and power estimator.
Moreover it has a richer set of analytics to compare die size, power,
etc. (This is the only area where both tools can be compared.)

  2. Sapient has budgeting, financial forecasting, product marketing
components (requirements and schedule analysis, scorecarding) and
product management components like package-selection and die-package
power-analysis, etc. -- and a richer set of analytics & dashboards
     compared to ChipEstimate.

  3. Sapient can do IC vs. FPGA analysis for implementation and cost.

Cadence InCyte has advantage in terms of 3rd party IP libs. But 80% of IP
we use is in-house IP. Sapient also has a .lib reader, which is useful.

I also believe Sapient-IC is around $5K vs. Cadence InCyte around $15K.
