Subject: User asks why should we buy Synopsys/Mentor FPGA design tools?

Hi, John,

Please keep me and my company anonymous.

Our group is looking at doing some performance intensive designs using
either Xilinx Virtex 7 or Altera Stratix V devices. Once we choose
which FPGA company/family to use, why shouldn't we just use the free RTL
synthesis tool that comes with it?

If we choose Xilinx, why not use their ISE Design Suite 13?

If we choose Altera, why not use their Quartus II v11.0?

Why should we even bother looking at the commercial FPGA design tools like
Synopsys Synplicity or Mentor Precision? Why pay for functionality that
we can already get for free? Is there an upside to these commercial tools
that my group is missing? Have any of your readers regretted buying them?

For us to buy any additional EDA tools means begging our CAD group for
budget; which we don't want to do unless absolutely necessary.
