Subject: 30 EDA executives voice support for the disaster victims in Japan
From: John Cooley <jcooley=user domain=zeroskew got calm>
I was in my car driving somewhere and listening to a NPR radio interview
of a Japanese family in a small coastal village who had two elementary
school aged sons. The older son was missing from the tsunami. The whole
family pretended that he was still alive in an attempt to shield his
younger brother from the truth. Even their neighbors pretended, too.
It unsettled me.
There wasn't much I could do in Boston. I'm 1/2 a world away. Sometimes
the only thing you can do is reach out and let people know you care.
So I asked 30 EDA leaders what they felt, how they reacted, how their own
company fared, or simply what they'd say to those in Japan if they could.
Here's what they sent back.

"We have over a dozen employees in Shin Yokohama, Japan. As 3/11 unfolded,
we were all deeply concerned and then relieved to learn that our Japan
team were safe since many, many others had suffered extreme loss. I am
proud of the courage and dedication of our team, and I extend my heartfelt
encouragement to our customers, associates and friends in Japan as they
recover from this disaster."
- Ajoy Bose
Chairman & CEO, Atrenta

"My daughter-in-law, Yoko, is from Osaka in the south of Japan and her
immediate family is relatively safe. Yoko has provided me with a sense
of the Japanese character. They are a tough, resilient, sharing and
hardworking culture. My take is they will move forward working together
without ego nor fanfare and methodically beat the problems of this
tragedy down."
- Howard Martin
President, Zocalo Tech Inc.

"I heard from my people that Japanese TV news released videos from monitor
cameras that the tsunami warning announcement was repeated again and again
by a local woman until the wave swallowed the local government building
where she worked. Her status is unknown.
I heard that there are many junior high school and high school graduation
commencements where the *photographs* of unknown status young students
received their own diploma from their teachers.
I heard of young firefighters send a text from their cell phone to their
mother/wife/girlfriend to say I'M SCARED BUT I'M READY TO GO! before they
entered a radioactive nuclear reactor site to protect the lives of others.
I would like to present my deep sympathy to all of people of unknown
status and to those who lost family members."
- John Kibarian,
President & CEO, PDF Solutions Inc.

"I have been working with friends & colleagues in the Japanese electronics
industry for decades. My family and I even lived there for a time; a time
we greatly enjoyed. So I was deeply saddened by the recent tragedy.
But also knowing the indomitable Japanese spirit, I have great confidence
that they will recover from this disaster. The Mentor family and I send
our thoughts and prayers to our Japanese friends and colleagues."
- Wally Rhines
Chairman & CEO, Mentor Graphics Corp.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Our heartfelt sympathies go to the families directly affected by this
terrible tragedy. We have heard first hand from our Japanese team of
the ongoing difficulties, and we want to convey a message of support
to our colleagues, friends and customers in Japan at this very
challenging time."
- Mark Williams
CEO, Pulsic Limited
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"We would like to express our greatest sympathy. The Japanese people have
lived through difficult times and have thus developed a unique strength,
discipline and unity which I find unique. It is our hope and belief that
Japan will come out stronger from this crisis."
- Ole Christian Andersen
President & CEO, Nangate Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"All of our Japan employees are safe and over the last 2 weeks, we gave
them the option to relocate in Osaka if they wished because of the
electricity & train disruptions and the Fukushima nuclear reactor.
I want express our admiration for the strong resilience and dignity of
the Japanese people as a whole during these difficult times."
- Luc Burgun
President & CEO, EVE
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"We are extremely fortunate that the employees of Tanner Japan and our
customers did not experience major injuries. It's our hope that the
authorities can quickly stabilize the situation and begin rebuilding
the lives, homes and communities of the Japanese people affected by
this catastrophe."
- Greg Lebsack
President, Tanner EDA
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan and especially
to those who we service in the semiconductor industry. We hope that
every nation rallies around Japan and provides the support that they
need so they may recover very quickly."
- Dave Orecchio
CEO, GateRocket Inc.

"I was Narita airport at the gate to board my flight home when the quake
hit. As a Californian, I've experienced earthquakes before, but nothing
on this scale. The magnitude of the shaking and the duration of the
quake astonished me, but what was even more amazing is that the Narita
airport terminal building survived.
All air, rail and freeway travel were suspended. What I then witnessed
was strangers helping strangers -- people who in most situations would
not have even noticed each other were now helping to make sure that
everyone survived this ordeal.
We scavenged food, water and blankets and shared with everyone who were
in need. With limited info, we didn't know the scale of the disaster.
While I was lucky to be able to fly away after a couple of days, the
people of Japan are left with destruction and an ongoing nuclear crisis.
I feel compelled to help, I would like to make a plea to my friends and
allies in the industry to help our friends in Japan by donating."
- Carol Hallett
VP of Worldwide Sales, Real Intent Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"I've exchanged messages with some friends over there, and I'm grateful to
learn that they are safe. Fortunately, they live and work quite far from
the epicenter, and were spared the brunt of the trauma. Even though the
rolling power outages are causing some inconvenience, and every aftershock
is still a big scare, they are mostly back in business.
My heart breaks for the countless people who have lost their family and
friends, their homes, their livelihoods and everything they once knew."
- Ed Cheng
CEO, Gradient Design Automation
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"We are with you in spirit, and we honor your brave heroes. We are
anxiously watching the developments and are eager to see the rapid
recovery of the Japanese people and nation."
- Ravi Subramanian
CEO, Berkeley Design Automation
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Fortunately, all of our colleagues in Japan are doing OK; though everyone
seems to be impacted given how big the event was.
I would like to share our deepest sympathies for the victims and terrible
destruction from the earthquake and tsunami. We admire Japan's resilience
in the face of this crisis and pray for a quick recovery."
- Charlie Hauck
CEO, Bluespec Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"All of us at Cadence extend our deepest sympathies to the people of Japan
in the aftermath of this devastating earthquake and tsunami.
The destructiveness of these events is almost unfathomable. And yet the
courage of the rescuers and fortitude of the survivors is inspiring.
We hope and pray for your welfare as you recover from this tragedy and
rebuild the affected communities."
- Lip-Bu Tan
President & CEO, Cadence Design Systems Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"People in Japan have demonstrated a high degree of discipline and self-
sacrifice in this earthquake, tsunami and nuclear combined tragedy.
They have earned worldwide respect and have never given up their spirit.
Japan will overcome the crisis and recover soon."
- Johnson Teng
COO & Executive VP, SpringSoft Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"The Magma family is fortunately coping reasonably well, better than many
companies. But I know many of our customers and partners have suffered.
While from a business perspective the semiconductor industry has not been
affected significantly, we offer our sympathies to the individuals and
families who have. Short-term business interruptions will surely be
overcome. Let us all remember the personal tragedies that will take
longer, and look for ways to help."
- Rajeev Madhavan
Chairman & CEO, Magma Design Automation
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Incredibly, after the earthquake one of my KK team members walked 30 km
for more than 5 hours to be with his family. He reminded me of what's
really important in life. We send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to
the people of Japan."
- Brett Cline
VP of Sales & Marketing, Forte Design Systems
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Too often it takes an event of this scale to bring our attention back to
what matters. An early report from one of Magma KK's sales reps described
in detail the problems he saw - the huge death toll, the cold weather, the
lack of electricity and oil, concerns over nuclear exposure, etc.
But he concluded with 'I and all my family are fine.'
That ability to look past severe difficulty and see what is important will
drive the inevitable recovery of that great nation."
- Roy Jewell
President & COO, Magma Design Automation Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"I lived in Japan half time for 2 years and have a lot of personal friends
there. I hear stories of continuing power outages and food shortages,
but they rarely complain. My condolences to those who lost someone.
Given the strength of the people, I am confident they will manage the best
recovery possible under these terrible circumstances."
- Dean Drako
President & CEO, IC Manage

"I won't ever forget where I was when the Sendai earthquake hit. It was a
normal evening. I was home in California online back-and-forth with
Kawashima-san, our Cadence Japan President in Tokyo.
There was an unexpected delay in our communication. Then his next message
said that there had been a huge earthquake. And even though it was in the
north, he said it was the biggest one he'd ever felt in his life.
He reported that there was damage to his building, no power and no working
elevators, although everyone was thankfully safe. A few minutes later, he
said the second earthquake was big and the building was still shaking.
It's unnerving, knowing something catastrophic is happening in real time
and I am connected in real time with the people in distress. My heart was
pumping and worrying for the people in Japan as if I was physically there.
In retrospect, I'm still amazed that as his building shook and swayed,
Kawashima-san was able to communicate with me online the whole time.
The power outage brought all city transportation to a halt. Some of our
Japanese colleagues were very worried about their wives and children and
tried unsuccessfully to get taxi. They ended up walking 5 hours to get
home early morning. I can only imagine how distressing that walk must
have been, not being able to call your family along the way and trying
desperately to get home. That image has stayed with me.
I am in awe by how well the Japanese have reacted under such tragedy;
their orderly behavior by their citizens under stress, their resolve to
be back on their feet, and the selfless sacrifice of those nuclear
power plant workers."
- Dr. Chi-Ping Hsu
Senior VP of Silicon Realization, Cadence Design Systems Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"My condolences to our friends in Japan. My colleagues in Tokyo went back
to work just hours after the terrible earthquake hit. With that spirit,
the Japanese people will no doubt make it through the disasters and come
out stronger."
- Yunshan Zhu
CEO, NextOp Software
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Our hearts go out to our friends, colleagues, customers, family members
in Japan. There is no doubt that their diligent preparations beforehand
and their quiet competence and heroism during and after these events
served to greatly reduce the toll of lives. Yet still the toll was high.
We wish the Japanese people the best as they continue to respond to this
triple disaster and work to resume their personal and professional lives."
- John Tanner, Ph.D.
CEO, Tanner Research Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"We were deeply saddened by the loss of lives and the hardship caused by
this unprecedented earthquake. Our hearts go out to those who were
impacted and will continue to pray for the restoration efforts. We wish
the best for people of Japan and are confident they will rise up again."
- Jue-Hsien Chern
CEO, AtopTech
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Immediately after the tsunami hit, we sent an email to our colleagues at
Spinnaker Systems, our distributor and good friends in Japan. As they
are in Tokyo, they reported that they were fine. At that time they
didn't know yet the full impact of the tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear
power plant. Obviously, the news reports since have not been good, but
our customers and users appear all to be OK. Still, even though they
are physically fine, events like these also take a psychological toll
that only time can heal."
- Michiel Ligthart
President & COO, Verific Design Automation
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"I am very fortunate to have a job with co-worker and customer friends
around the globe, who share their perspectives and alter my world view.
This is especially true of my colleagues in Japan. I was shocked and
worried about them when I heard of the news of the earthquake and tsunami.
In conversations since then, they have demonstrated patriotism, concern
for others, a work ethic, and a determination to succeed.
Thanks, John, for giving me a public opportunity to express my support
for them."
- Kathryn Kranen
President & CEO, Jasper Design Automation
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"I watched a YouTube video of the Tsunami hitting a small coastal village
in Japan. I was horrified to see, within seconds, homes drowned in water
and all the devastation caused. It is difficult to imagine all that our
friends and colleagues in Japan must face. I would like to extend my best
wishes moving forward as they rebuild. My thoughts are with them."
- Amit Gupta
President & CEO, Solido Design Automation
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"After the tragic events in Japan, I sincerely wish a quick recovery to
the Japanese people, express my deepest sympathies and share the grief
of their immense loss.
I look forward to continue working with our Japanese friends, partners,
and colleagues to make our world a better place."
- Yuri Feinberg
CEO, Silicon Frontline
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"I think I speak for everyone at AWR in saying we have been awed and
inspired by our co-workers in Japan for their bravery and resolve. I
believe the people of Japan can be proud of their actions and confident
about their future. AWR is standing with them and committed to the
rebuilding of Japan."
- Ted Miracco
Executive VP, AWR Corporation
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"On behalf of the Docea Power team I would like to testify to our support
of the Japanese people. We appreciate them for their professional and
personal skills. In particular, our thoughts go to our partners from
HDLab, Synopsys and Tokyo University and their families."
- Ghislain Kaiser
CEO, Docea Power
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"From the e-mails I've received from our colleagues in Japan over last few
days, I've been told that they don't care about the 30 km they walked that
horrific night to embrace their loved ones -- they just want to take on
the next challenges facing their families and nation and to move forward
with inner strength."
- Vic Kulkarni, Sr. VP & GM, Apache Design Solutions
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"Seeing the horrible destruction in Japan, it's clear we are incapable of
stopping nature's forces, and that reigning in a nuclear threat takes
extremes of skill and courage. In the face of these challenges, we can
only extend compassion and support to our employees, friends, partners,
and all of the affected people.
I've heard stories that are heart-wrenching and heartwarming coming from
our friends and co-workers in Japan. While they all tell what a difficult
time this has been, we also hear a desire to put this crisis behind them
and return to normal life as quickly as possible.
On behalf of all of Synopsys, our thoughts, prayers and hopes are with
everyone in Japan."
- Dr. Chi-Foon Chan
President & COO, Synopsys Inc.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
"As I watched the news footage, it amazed me to see the Japanese people
in long lines calmly waiting outside a store for basic necessities,
entering one-by-one smiling and head-bowing to the door monitor.
If these were Americans after a major quake/tsunami/radiation triple
disaster, it would have been pandemonium to get the food and water.
The enduring fabric of their culture will see Japan through this."
- Keith Mueller
President & CEO, Tuscany Design Automation Inc.
