Hi John,

Please keep the response anonymous if you use it.

I visited the three DM booths at length at DAC. I asked all three about
the following problem:

"We would like to tape out on a shuttle tapeout many versions of
our chip, which vary in only a leaf cell deep in the hierarchy.
Without configuration management, the only way to do this is to
make many copies of the entire hierarchy all the way down to the
leaf cell. That's cumbersome and error-prone, especially if we
later find we also have to modify some cell higher in our
hierarchy. Can your tool solve this problem?"

The folks at Cliosoft never seemed to understand the issue. Their answer
to "How are you better than the free VersionSync that comes with Cadence"
was "In the next release of Cadence, there's no free version control."

The folks at the Synchronicity booth do understand the issue, but have
no solution. (I asked their Field Apps folks about this a month before
the conference, and as of July 14, there is no answer.)

IC Manage had a demo ... but Cadence wasn't configured and they didn't
have anyone who could quickly demo the feature I was asking about.

Since the conference, I've seen a demo of IC Manage. With their solution,
you make N copies of the libraries with different names, but the
software keeps track of version history across renames, so when you
update one copy of a cell in one library, you could push the changes to
all the other libraries. It's a neat idea. I don't have a sense for how
it would work in practice, but we may try it.
