Subject: ( ESNUG 423 #8 ) Aart on Magma Market Share & Cadence Open Access

> Do Magma's revenues represent growth in the P&R space or are they just
> revenue won from existing Cadence and Synopsys/Avanti customers?

According to published market share reports, Synopsys gained market share
in place & route over the past year. Magma also seems to have gained a
piece of the market, while Cadence clearly lost share.

You can draw your own conclusions as to where the gains came from.

I'd like to respond to this, too, John.

Open Access is a database project being done by Cadence and some of its
customers. Currently, it has virtually no tape-outs, no data,
and almost no EDA tools running natively, including Cadence's tools.

Ever since starting Synopsys, we have been strong advocates for open
access to our products, believing that users should be able to amend our
solution with other companies' products as they see fit. Staying closed
has never been a recipe for long-term success. Looking back, Synopsys
has pioneered numerous open standards over the years.

Following our words with actions, we opened up our Milkyway database to
other EDA vendors through our MAP-in program immediately after acquiring
it. It is production proven, open, and extensible; and it is the
foundation of our Galaxy design platform. Thousands of designs have
been taped out using Milkyway, down to and including 90 nanometers. It
has been in production use for several years, and has been proven to be
extensible as we continually move to smaller process geometries. There
have been several production integrations to it, including tools from
customers such as LSI Logic and National, and from other EDA vendors
such as Synchronicity (which recently announced Digital Developer Suite
for Milkyway for design data management) and Mentor (Calibre).

We believe that it is important to provide our customers with strong
interoperability, so we are participating with Si2 in the Golden Gate
Working Group to build bridges between Milkyway and OAC. We are hopeful
that Cadence will be successful in moving their AMS customer base to
OAC, so that we can then offer these customers a path to the capabilities
in our AMS tools that they have previously not had access to.
