( ESNUG 423 Item 13 ) ------------------------------------------- [02/26/04]

Subject: Peggy Aycinena, former Editor-in-Chief EDA Weekly & ISD magazine

My list ...

1 - Why isn't Aart on the panel?

2 - Do they feel that they need to strengthen/protect their position as
IP vendors .. isn't that the real future of EDA?

3 - What's with all the pirated licenses in China -- these EDA guys know
it's going on, but they continue to shower honor and respect on a
market that uses 9 pirated licenses for every 1 that actually gets
    paid for?

4 - Do they really expect people to believe that these guys are outsourcing
to China/India because that's where the talent is and not because it's
just cheaper there? -- do they agree with Carly (HP) and Craig (Intel)
that it's the fault of the U.S. universities because U.S. schools are
turning out crappy graduates? If Cadence is so concerned about
educational investments, why don't they start institutes in the U.S.
on par with the ones they keep bragging about in China and Russia?
Does Magma intend eventually to re-locate their corp. headquarters
    to India?

5 - How many 'big' customer accounts do they each have and what dollar
figure defines a 'big' customer -- and how much are they willing to
adjust their technology initiatives to satisfy the whims of those
accounts? How much are they willing to adjust on a case-by-case basis
their business model to satisfy the whims of the 'big' customers?

6 - Do these guys think the EDA tools are getting the revenue they deserve?
Are the companies getting paid what it actually costs to develop/support
    the tools?

7 - Why do people consistantly believe that the big EDA vendors have no
real interest in pushing the envelope -- is it true that these guys
really just want to maintain the status quo.

8 - How much do they have to bow and scrape to satisfy the demands of
the big foundries - don't pretend it's not true? Not do you bow
and scrape, but how much do you bow and scrape?

9 - What percentage of these guys' revenue is coming from the Defense Dept
or the Dept of Homeland security? Do they anticipate that increasing
    in the near future?

10 - Exactly how many lawsuits are they each engaged in right now? Are any
of these guys suing anybody else who's on the panel? Why?

11 - What's with buying small companies and letting their technology die?
John, you're the expert here ... nail these guys about companies
they've bought and put in the attic and allowed to die.

12 - Where is Penny Herscher and why did she leave?

13 - What's with the FPGA thing? If Synplicity can make a go of it in the
industry, why don't the rest of these guys try (harder)?

14 - When will these guys stop pulling strings at DAC, DVCon, etc. to get
panels and papers just the way they want them to be? Why don't they
let the best panels, papers see the light of day?

15 - Do these guys think they should always get the best pick of the
college grads if they're investing in the labs at those universities?
Don't deny that it's true, because everybody knows it is.

good luck ... Peggy
