Subject: News & Rumors on Tela, HTC, SEC, Atrenta, Magma, Dini, Sonics, MENT
ITEM 3: Here's the latest news & rumors I've heard about EDA and fabs since
my prior post. Feel free to comment/correct/scold anything you see here!
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Remember last month how IEEE Spectrum ranked tiny Tela Innovations as
#11 in kickass patents in Semiconductor Manufacturing for 2012? Well
EEtimes.com says Tela is suing HTC, LG, Motorola, Pantech and Nokia
for infringing 7 patents involving "advanced IC manufacturing design
and physical implementation". Filed ITC and Delaware District Court.
Qualcomm, KLA, Cadence fund Tela -- yet also sell to HTC, LG, Moto...
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Rumor has it that SEC lawyers are calling around snooping on possible
insider leaks and stock trades in the Synopsys acquisition of Magma.
Now is not a good time to be someone who traded LAVA stock back then.
Funny thing is DeepChip broke this suspicious-LAVA-stock-sales story
13 months ago in ESNUG 497 #3. Finally the SEC is investigating???
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Tanner EDA says Incentia's DesignCraft (digital logic synthesis) and
TimeCraft (static timing analysis) tools are now embedded in Tanner's
HiPer Silicon AMS tool. Targets cheapseat big-A, little-D designs.
WTF??? Incentia last showed at DAC back in 2009. Aren't they dead?
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- FUN QUOTE:
"You're the 5th person to ask me that today."
- Mike Gianfagna of Atrenta on the rumor
Cadence is about to acquire Atrenta
for $150 million in cash. (02/05/13)
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Remember Gary Meyers, the ex-Symplicity CEO who Carl Icahn planted
on MENT's board in early 2011 -- and then MENT cleverly got him
booted off of MENT's board in early 2012??? Well, it turns out Gary
is also on the Oasys board, too. (I didn't know that until now.)
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- FUN DATA QUOTE:
"Revenues grew 15%, operating profitability improved ~5%, and
operating cash flow increased 31%. With $827 M of cash and
short term investments at year end, our balance sheet is well
positioned blah blah blah."
- Geoff Ribar, CDNS CFO on CDNS'12 financials (01/30/13)
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Looks like there's Yet-Another-FPGA-based-HW-Accelerator company;
this time it's a French company called "Reflex CES" which sells a box
called "FPP25" -- it simulates 25 million gates using 3 Virtex 7's.
Weirdly, two Dini DNV7F2A's linked together can simulate 56 million
gates using only 4 Virtex 7's total.
Reflex CES will be at Embedded World 2013 in Germany, Feb 26-28th.
The Dini Group will be at DVcon'13 in San Jose, Feb 25-28th.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Real Intent, Inc. put out a press release that they're sponsoring a
DV Club meeting in Milpitas with $0.5 billionare Dean Drako, CEO of
IC Manage speaking on Valentine's Day. (Can you feel the love???)
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Speaking of Real Intent, on Monday they announced that RTL generated
by Calypto's Catapult C-to-RTL synthesis is now lintable/checkable
with Ascent Lint. Claim its "50X faster than older lint tools".
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- FUN QUOTE:
"At 1,300+ pages, I doubt engineers will be printing it out."
- Dave Rich of Mentor on the System Verilog 2012
LRM going live online soon (02/07/13)
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Two weeks ago in an unexpected sea change at Calypto, Doug Aitelli
was suddenly replaced by Sanjiv Kaul as CEO. Towing the company
party line Sanjiv said in his first press release:
"It has just completed a very successful year where Calypto
achieved strong growth, record deals and substantial cash
in the bank. With our best bookings year ever..."
- Sanjiv Kaul, new CEO of Calypto (02/04/13)
Which begs the question of: "if Calypto was doing so well, why
replace its CEO?" Regardless, Sanjiv has killer EDA street cred;
he was the GM at Synopsys pushing PhysOpt during the 2000 suprise
Physical Synthesis Tape-out Census that put Synopsys on the P&R map.
If it weren't for Sanjiv, Aart today would still be stuck trying to
ramp up in P&R vs. Aart today owning the majority of P&R.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- My spies tell me that Sonics, Inc. has shut down its Taiwan R&D and
Armenia R&D sites. Their web site says nothing. Can't tell if it's
Sonics moving R&D back to the U.S. or it's having $$$ problems.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
- Watch out Aart! With Cadence buying Cosmic Circuits with all of its
AMS, USB, MIPI, Audio, WIFI IP -- plus some key IP already qualified
down to TSMC 20 nm -- plus Denali's memory dominance, it looks like
Lip-Bu Tan is getting serious about the IP business. Watch out!
