Subject: recent ex-Cadence employees

OBVIOUS SKEW -- Although there were only 4 of them, I felt that any "user"
who was part of the recent Cadence layoffs should NOT be included in the
overall stats. They'd be too crazy biased one way or another -- and not
acting as true user.

BE SURE TO READ ALL 8 PARTS OF THIS REPORT OR YOU'LL BE MISLED.

1.) As an EDA USER would a Cadence controlled Mentor be a good thing
or a bad thing for you? Why?

3.) As EITHER, do you want this merger to happen? (CHOOSE YES or NO)

I was an EDA vendor turned EDA user recently, thanks to Cadence's actions
to make this bid for Mentor. Yes, Cadence laid off a number of us in May
so that it can bid on Mentor. So I will comment on both (1) and (2):

  (1) As an EDA user, it is both good and bad.

It is good because as with any consolidation, new players will come into
the market who can foster innovative tools. I have been looking into
various vendor tools in P&R and Mixed signal area, and I am sad to say
that not only the various vendor tools are alike, they are the same for
  the last 7 years.

It is bad because, consolidation will make fewer players in the market
and as a result the tool choices will be limited. Anytime we have limited
choice, it is not a buyers' market anymore. As a result, I expect the
  tool prices will progressively increase.

  (2) As an EDA vendor (especially Mentor people) this can only be bad.

Consolidation means there will be widespread job cuts (contrary to
whatever the CEOs may say). Actually, Cadence did cut jobs preemptively.
In fact I was one of the casualties.

  (3) I vote NO for this merger, but I sincerely hope for some form of
change in this industry. It has been stagnating for a long time.

I am a former Cadence employee, and don't want any repercussions... ;-)

A Cadence controlled Mentor is a BAD THING! Cadence will do to them
what they did to Orcad and a dozen other firms - take their products and
flush them down the toilet. They will make lip service to maintaining the
product lines, but their chief goal is the elimination of competition. In
the board design space, they want to eliminate Boardstation. Period. In
the FPGA space, they might keep the product lines alive for a while till
they can completely destroy them, but they will never continue them when
they have a competing product. Existing products will almost always
prevail in the Cadence political climate.

No, I don't want this merger to happen. We don't have enough competition
to keep the product lines healthy as it is. We need choices in
  the marketplace, not monopolies!

I'm not sure if it would be anti competitive enough to warrant government
blockage, but maybe the PCB industry would think so?

You didn't ask me if I was a shareholder! I do still hold stock from my
ESPP account at cadence. I was quite shocked (too recently) to learn of
the big price drop back in Feb. I would love cadence to FIX their
revenue issues and get the stock price back up.

I'm quite skeptical of this approach!

If it DOES happen, I think I'll sell the remaining cadence stock; but I
should probably do that any way!

YES!!! It might kill two birds with one (mill)stones worth of debt!

This is a great move. The need for hardware design tools is shrinking
every year as more of the design moves from hardware to software. Where
will long term growth come from? It certainly isn't going to come from
business as usual, or the introduction of new tools at the expense of
older ones. The only path forward is consolidation to achive any
semblance of growth in the near term. This applies to Synopsys as well.

EDA is a mature industry and needs to begin expanding beyond it's
traditional walls. Consolidation is a fact of life. I fully expect
mergers or acquisitions that propel EDA vendors outside their traditional
customer base in the coming year or so.

Business is business and Cadence needs to meet their shareholders
expectations however they can. Good for Mike Fister and Cadence for
  moving the ball forward.
