( ESNUG 471 Item 8 ) -------------------------------------------- [02/19/08]

Subject: Gary Smith - Gary Smith EDA

What is your current definition of the "Intelligent Test Bench"?

Wasn't last year the year of ESL?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Curious why Hogan and Atul were having dinner at Hobees in Campbell
on Tuesday of last week. (Hobees is sort of a vegan Denny's... not
up scale at all but pretty anonymous. Hardly the haunt of multi-
millionaires.)

New start-up coming? (I know Jim and/or Atul may not make the panel
but...)

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

For Gary : ARM reported their last FQ lower than expected, Freescale
in re-org and their CEO leaving, MIPS not really delivering big
number to the market, what is wrong in the semi industry?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Is EDA a dying industry?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Question for Gary Smith:

Your own analysis of ESL indicates that all the recent activity is
in Virtual Prototypes for design and verification. Is ESL Synthesis
irrelevant?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Question for Gary Smith:

You have stated that lack of a 'concurrent system compiler' is a
crisis for programming multi-processor systems and that a new
concurrent language is needed. Yet lots of real designs with
heterogeneous multi-processors exist and succeed (take a look at
your cell phone). To quote an album title from the 1970's:
"Crisis? What crisis?"

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Gary,

Why are you perpetually optimistic about pipedreams like ESL
and Cadence Design Systems?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

What are your thoughts on recent EDA market-share developments?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Are these "all you can eat" deals bad for EDA and the customer?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Where has the passionate, vocal engineer gone? Is the fear of
outsourcing causing him/her to shut up and let the financial
folks drive the design flows?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Gary Smith: There are 5 guys in the physical design business now...
Magma (Talus), Synopsys (ICC), Cadence (SOCE), Mentor (Sierra Olympus),
Atoptech (Aprisa). History shows the market can handle 2 or maybe 3
players. Where do you see things falling out?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Ask all of them if the business of Chip deign and EDA is now a mature
industry and has limited or no growth? What is next?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

How can we get young people to choose electronics engineering as a
career anymore after we outsourced everything to India and Asia?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

As a responsible parent, would you allow your kid to become a chip
designer or an EDA developer? Wouldn't he/she becoming a street thug
or a crack whore be a more stable and honorable career in the long run?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

For Gary: Why is Dean on this panel?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

For Gary: Is there any evidence that ESL will ever take off?

         ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

Question for Gary: At the EDAC CEO panel, Sanjay Srivastava of
Denali said that ESL is dead on the vine and that the next level
of abstraction is IP and software. Agree? Disagree? Why?
