Subject: 4 Users Who Think This Merger Increases Competition
> Cadence announced it's buying Verisity for $285 million in cash.
>
> As an EDA user, do you think this is good news or bad news? Why?
Good News. Synopsys now has a serious competitor on verification
front. Verisity got a good price, so EDA company still worth
something. On the other hand, smaller players are having a hard
time standing on their own these days.

Guess I'd put this in the good news camp if only to keep Synopsys
honest with competition from someone who spans the EDA product
space (Cadence) as compared to Verisity on their own in the
verification space.

As an EDA user I think it is great news. As a long time Cadence NC-SIM
customer, I was surprised Synopsys could lure us to VCS. It was
obvious early last year Synopsys had dealt a crushing blow to both
NC-SIM and Specman with the one two punch of free Vera to VCS customers
and free use of the Vera constructs in System Verilog. We actually
bought new VCS seats rather than add to existing NC-SIM seats and
resuscitate our lapsed Specman seats last year. There was no way we
could afford a Specman seat for every simulator seat. Competition is
required to keep vendors honest and committed to innovation.
The great simulator war begins anew in 2006!

This is good news because it strengthens Cadence's verification
offering and makes them a more viable competitor to Synopsys. It
also helps Specman as a tool, by taking it from a point solution
to (potentially) a tool integrated into a complete design flow.
