Subject: Does Synopsys Even Talk To Users About Its Malformed SW Installer?
Hi John,
For years my group has been asking for the ability to specify an environment
variable in the Synopsys path to tools, so that we can more easily install
and propagate a tool package across the world, in various sites and
(therefore) various paths. This was also the concern of other people, since
I got a "yeah, we know we have to fix this" response from a Synopsys support
guy when I phoned about it.
Well, Synopsys just introduced their latest & greatest installation script.
They probably spent several man-years getting a beautiful installation
script going, written entirely in Tcl, with a GUI and all. Of course it's
written to use a hard-coded path... Better yet: they now have a start of a
wrapper script around their tools (we've had one working for eons now, and
it sets the license as well as the environment for the tool, allows you to
choose your favourite release in 5 different ways, etc.) They create a
symbolic link to it from the [platform]/syn/bin directory with an absolute
path!
I don't know whether to laugh or cry, but I can tell you: they could have
talked to us users before getting this installer done...
