Subject: Which Version Of Linux Is Cadence/Synopsys/Mentor Supporting?

Hi John,

Red Hat seems to be no longer offering the lower end version of its Linux
distribution. The last version was RedHat 9.0. They've spun off the lower
end market and merged with the "Fedora Linux Project" to create a new free
Linux distro (see http://fedora.redhat.com ). As far as I can tell, RedHat
is focusing on the higher end market, and will now only sell an "Advanced
Server" product, which will be pretty costly (relative to $0!), not legal to
copy, and require ongoing maintenance costs for bugfixes, updates, etc.

I was wondering which Linux version(s) EDA vendors plan on supporting down
the road? I've always just downloaded the RedHat distro I'm interested in
locally, and then done batch install scripts to set up the compute servers
(and managed updates in a similar fashion). Hopefully we won't be required
to purchase expensive RedHat AS licenses for each compute farm server!

Hi, John,

Take a look on http://www.redhat.com and let me know what you think. What
version of Linux will become the standard now for EDA tools? Will we be
forced to pay out for the new "Red Hat Enterprise Linux" edition or will
we be able to use "Fedora Linux" or will it be something else? There isn't
much mention of this on the Synopsys web site. I guess this is a downside
to open source projects that are owned by someone... grumble... grumble...
grumble... If you know me, you'd know what MY choice would be -- too bad
people are so closed-minded about these things...
