Subject: I Can't Get My VCS Linux Farm To Run Faster Than Sun Workstations

Hi, John,

I would like to post a question regarding VCS simulations. I am working
to set up a Linux farm as an addition to our Sun compute farm. However,
during testing of our simulation runs, I have not been able to get
any type of substantial speed-up that everyone seems to be talking
about. Our Sun machines are Solaris 2.7, 333-450 MHz, and the Linux
machines I am testing are Red Hat 6.2/7.2, 1 GHz Intel with 1 GB of ram.
Now since the simulation images aren't exceeding 150 MB, this doesn't
seem like a memory/swap issue. I have compiled with the VCS option +prof
to turn profiling on, and the vast majority of time is spent in execution,
so it doesn't seem like a PLI/external problem.

I recently ran the simulations on Sun machines, the 1 GHz Linux machines,
and a new 1.9 GHz Intel. The Sun 400 MHz was the slowest, the 1 GHz ran
about 15% faster, and the 1.9 GHz about 25-30% faster. Now according to
most theories, the sims on the Linux machines should be at least 2x as fast
as the Sun. We have pretty standard installations of Solaris and RedHat,
so I'm wondering if there are tweaks or features that need to be implemented
to get this working. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
