Subject: Synopsys SmartModels Run *Painfully* Slow On Cadence NC-SIM VHDL
Hi, John,
We are running a Synopsys SmartModel for a vendor's proprietary ASIC hard
core on Cadence VHDL NC-SIM3.2. The SmartModel version runs in approx. 45
minutes on the NC-SIM simulator (same TestBench). We have also tried NC-SIM
versions 3.0, 3.1 & 3.3 with roughly similar results. We have also tried
both Sun and HP platforms with roughly similar results. The same SmartModel
runs in approx. 5 minutes on the Modeltech MTI simulator (same TestBench).
This is for both Sun and HP platforms. This is approx. 10X the performance
of NC-SIM. (By the way, the uncompiled native code model runs in less than
1 minute on the NC-SIM simulator.)
Has anyone else experienced relatively poor performance of SmartModels on
NC-SIM when compared to the MTI simulator? Is there some inherent difference
between the two simulators that would explain the difference is simulation
times? Is the NC-SIM poor performance limited solely to VHDL simulations or
does it include both VHDL and Verilog simulations? Is there anything that
can be done to resolve this problem?
