Subject: User Asks "Why Can't DC Instance Names Have Device Types In Them?"

Hi John,

How much time do you spend looking at Verilog netlists? I have been doing
quite a lot lately and have gotten quite tired of translating Synopsys
generated device instance names into device types. The netlists I look at
all have pretty unique and informative instance names right down to the
register names but not for synthesized combinational logic.

When we generate reports, or say use Mentor tools, my device type
information (AND/OR/NOR) disappears!!! Something I had the CAD department
at LSI do back when we had schematic capture was to make a device's type
part of it's instance name. I found this sped up debug considerably.

Do you think Synopsys could be convinced to do something more meaningful
with device instance names other than U1, U2 and U3? Wouldn't U_nand2_0
and U_NR4B_33 be more meaningful?

Whaddayathink?
