( SNUG 00 Item 5 ) --------------------------------------------- [ 4/05/00 ]

RELIGIOUS WAR RESOLVED: If you've been reading ESNUG for the past 3 or
so months, one of the recent contentious issues that's come up within the
backend Place & Route community has been between working hierarchically
versus in a flat mode. The SNUG'00 survey asked about this and got:

                    Flat Only ########## 20%
            Hierarchical Only ############ 24%
         Mixed (Flat & Hier.) ############################ 56%

               Average Number
Of Blocks At Top Level: 12 (with 34 percent saying 15+)

A total of 80 percent of physical design is done either hierarchically or
in a mixed flat & hierarchical mode with 34 percent of designers saying
they have over 15 blocks at their top level. Case closed.
